Three Wonderful Walks to Discover in Munich

Travel & Tourism
Munich is a wonderful city bursting to the brim with beautiful Bavarian architecture, authentic street cafes and more galleries and museums than you can count. The best method of soaking up as much culture as possible is to take it all in by foot, wandering through the medieval streets at your own pace. These self-guided walks are perfect for the solo traveller who wants to stray off the beaten tourist track.

Maximilianstrasse

One of Munich’s most popular attractions, this incredible street can take from half an hour to several hours to meander down, as your attention is bound to be caught by more than one of its amazing sights.

The Bavarian Parliament building marks one end of the route, its Gothic façade overlooking the river Isar. Follow the Maximiliansbrücke bridge over the water, from where you can enjoy great views of the islands dotting the river and the surrounding streets. If you’re visiting in summer, chances are the sandy banks will be full of people enjoying a spot of sunbathing. On the other side of the bridge you’ll enter the Old Town, and pass an impressive statue of King Maximilian II, the Bavarian monarch responsible for much of the surrounding architecture.

The street widens from here into a small square, with a 19th century palace made of beautiful terracotta. Nearby is the GOP variety theatre which puts on shows of an evening, as well as some of the best examples of luxury shopping that Munich has to offer. The Maximilianstrasse walk ends on Max-Joseph-Platz, a busy square which houses the famous Bavarian Opera House as well as some great dining options.

Sendlinger Tor to Isartor, via New Synagogue and Old Market

This culture-filled walk takes you across Old Town from one gate to another in about 3 hours.

You’ll immediately spot the Asamkirche church, one of Munich’s most breathtaking buildings. The Baroque elegance of its façade extends into the interior, where organ music is sometimes played. Head towards Viktualienmarkt, a popular shopping area, passing the architecturally innovative Munich synagogue. You’ll soon find a busy square which holds restaurants, boutiques and hotels, as well as the Town Hall. This is a nice spot to rest your legs and have a beer.

Head diagonally across the square and onto Frauenstrasse, which will lead you directly to Isartor. This medieval gate was once the entrance to the city from the river and has been well preserved.

Marienplatz to the English Garden

This 3 hour long stroll lets you tick off all the biggest and best sights that Munich has to offer.

Marienplatz is the main central square, which is surrounded by fantastic buildings such as the famous Glockenspiel, the tower clock whose moving figurines give performances throughout the day. A recommended activity is to climb the tower of Peterskirche, which gives incredible views over the whole city. From here if you head north west you will find the beloved Frauenkirche, the city’s main attraction. The legend is that the devil left a footprint at the entrance to the church, which you can see to this day.

Head down Kaufingerstrasse, a bustling shopping street full of musicians and street food. In a few minutes you’ll reach Karlsplatz, widely held to be the most beautiful square in Munich. It is circled by gorgeous buildings and has a fountain in the centre. Another square, Odeonsplatz, is 10 minutes away and also beautiful, with a more Roman feel. Walk under the arch and you’ll find yourself in a small park, Hofgarten, in whose grounds is the palace and main residence of the Bavarian Kings. Wander through the peaceful greenery to the wonderful English Garden.
