Probably just as important as your choice of running shoes, is your choice of running socks. Different sock types will help you achieve different goals. Here are a couple pointers on how to choose the right ones. You should wear low-cut socks on warmer days, especially when you have to run on asphalt. Most runners who often use racing flats or lightweight trainers like to wear low-cut socks as a way to minimize bulk in the hopes of reducing race times. Higher cut socks are recommended for running in cold weather, as they provide warmth. If you have an ankle injury, higher-cut socks can possibly help as they provide support. Trail runners often use higher-cut socks to keep rocks out of their socks and to protect themselves from shrub. You should wear thin socks on hot days. They'll allow for better air flow to keep your feet cool. If you are a minimalist who likes to feel the ground when you run, thinner socks will probably appeal to you more. Cushion socks provide padding to the heel, toes, and under the ball of the foot. These are great for helping to prevent soreness after a run. You will most likely do well in a cushioned sock if you are a long distance runner or run on tough trails. Some Cushioned socks are thick all the way around. They can help prevent blistering but also trap heat (good in cold weather, bad in hot weather). Some are thin on the top and cushioned on the bottom, which provides a nice balance between comfort and performance.
