If you’re looking for somewhere to escape the crowds this summer, look no further than Zadar. Beach breaks have never been so relaxing or easy to organise with this north Croatian well-kept secret. With cultural and historical attractions that live up to those of Dubrovnik (and none of the price tags!), it’s the perfect summer holiday destination. |
What better to way to thoroughly relax and soak up the sun than on a beautiful Zadar beach? It’s only a short ferry ride away to the beautiful white sand and dazzling turquoise waters of Saharun beach. Travelling here outside of July and August means you can enjoy the beach without the crowds and experience authentic Croatia.
In Zadar, you’re never far from a breath-taking national park, and Croatia has three to offer: Paklenica, Plitvice and Krka. With a mixture of waterfall swimming, hiking and rock-climbing, it has perfect activities to get you feeling active.
The Finer Things in Life
Zadar does not mess about when it comes to food and drink. Wine has been a staple in Croatia for thousands of years and Zadar is right on the border of two important growing regions: Dalmatia and Istria and Kvarner.
Head to La Bodega for the chance to taste all of Croatia’s best wines in one place, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
The relaxed vibes don’t end with the beach. In the Old Town of Zadar, you can kick back on all-day sun beds in The Garden, while enjoying the incredibly fresh raw menu on offer. And you can’t visit the Zadar beach and not sample the seafood! There are a wide variety of restaurants to choose from, ranging from the traditional tiny konobas to modern bistros within the city walls.
For the truly authentic Croatian experience, the city’s art installations are unmissable. Stunning sunsets are made even more magical by the Monument to the Sun – a 22-metre solar panel disc meant to reflect the sun’s rays, displaying gorgeous light patterns when night falls. Pair this with the Sea Organ and you’re in heaven. Formed by steps cut into the side of the waterfront, the Sea Organ is a giant harmonica played by waves filling underwater pipes and it is the perfect partner to an awe-inspiring sunset.
Music to your Ears
Zadar is well-known for its music scene. Whether you’re looking for a way to let your hair down for the night or to experience beautiful melodies, this city has everything. Numbered among its many dance music festivals are Hideout and Fresh Island festivals, attracting thousands of partiers each year.
But if crazy parties aren’t your thing, the amazing acoustics in one of Croatia’s best known churches make for a spine-tingling classical music venue. The Church of St Donat brings together the city’s Roman and Byzantine heritage and is a must-see (and hear!).
