3 Interesting Cities to Explore on Your German Holiday

Travel & Tourism
If you could only choose one region in which to spend your German holiday, it would have to be Bavaria. Stunning alpine scenery and local German culture combine to make an unforgettable experience. In Bavaria, the traditional and the modern come together in perfect harmony, and there are plenty of hikes and lakes to swim in, which are ideal for keeping you active.

It can be hard to narrow down exactly where to go in Bavaria, so we’ve picked our top 3 destinations.

Augsburg

Located along one of the best drives in the country, Augsburg makes for the perfect couples’ getaway. The 400-kilometre Romantic Road winds through idyllic mountain scenes and forests, and Augsburg is the largest city on the route.

Augsburg itself is a beautifully traditional city of cobbled streets and spires. With its two Michelin starts, it never ceases to wow its visitors, and brings a modern feel to the authentic German holiday experience. Augsburg also caters to the vegan lifestyle: Be sure to check out Die Extra Veganten, a café that produces exquisite vegan meals with the freshest local produce.

Augsburg might be in alpine country, but a 30-minute transfer from the airport will have you among the mountains in no time.

Starnberg

Also known as the Fünfseenland (Five Lakes District), Starnberg is an idyllic escape from the cities in the summer. Located in a glacial plain, it’s an area of outstanding natural beauty and was once an idyllic retreat for the nobility. Today, the area is still popular among the rich and famous, so you can hang out with the stars during your German holiday!

The largest lake, the Starnberger See, is 21 kilometres long and offers extensive hiking and cycling routes to get your legs pumping. The smaller lakes have a more secluded and romantic charm, but it’s possible to go swimming, boating and windsurfing on all lakes in the area.

You won’t believe how quickly you can get to the lakes. After a 30-minute ride, you’ll already be in the heart of the Fünfseenland.

Munich

It would be impossible to visit southern Germany and not see Munich, the capital of Bavaria. Munich is a global city with a small-town feel, which is perfect for a German holiday. Here, the traditional and the modern come together in a spectacular mix of alpine beer halls and chic restaurants, both of which are so esteemed that you’ll often have to book your place many months in advance.

Munich is also known for its quirky shopping style. You’ll find amazing vintage pieces next to artisan boutiques, and at the Viktualienmarkt, you can sample the finest local produce, including sumptuous cheeses and olives.

A short 30-minute transfer will have you in the centre of Munich before you know it.

How to Get There

Munich Airport is served by all major airlines from a range of UK airports, which makes booking a last-minute German holiday easy. Shuttle Direct offers a range of airport transport services to suit your needs, ranging from private transfers to shuttle buses. You don’t need to worry about getting from A to B when you pre-book a ride on our online booking system. Organising your travels has never been as hassle-free!

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you’re planning a German holiday Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you and your board get to and from the airport swiftly and safely.
