At a time, when we need to look at everyday products more responsibly, Therefore Design forays into designing a range of biodegradable tableware… Just launched in Delhi, with an imminent launch in Mumbai later this week, Chuk is the latest addition to the fast-growing eco-friendly range of tableware. Chuk products has the potential to replace the ever-wasteful and non-biodegradable Styrofoam and plastic tableware commonly in use. Responding to the need of the hour and commissioned by Yash Papers, Therefore Design, who has developed the range, envisages it as the perfect replacement for all non-biodegradable disposable waste, which is a major contributor to the environmental crisis we face today. Developed as a range of modular tableware, Chuk comprises plates, bowls and meal trays in a combination of sizes and shapes that assist in serving a variety of Indian cuisine, which is usually a combination of liquid, semi-liquid and solid foods. A further study of eating styles and habits (majority of Indian foods are eaten by hand) ensures that Chuk products sport an efficient and effective design that is easily adaptable. The products can be stacked both inside the meal plate as well as outside, making the range adaptable and the inventory easily manageable. At a time, when the masses are getting more conscious about the waste they generate, Chuk products achieves an edge. Crafted out of repurposed sugarcane pulp, a by-product of the sugar industry, the products have scope of large scale manufacturing at low costs, offering retailers a lucrative switch from the widespread low-cost plastic and Styrofoam tableware. The nine products currently launched – a set of bowls, plates and trays that can be combined in a plethora of ways to accommodate specific needs, are only the first step towards the larger vision that Therefore Design envisages. The designers are committed towards introducing an even wider range of products to encompass all tableware, including glasses, spoons, forks and even packaging, to eliminate the use and need for the current range of non-degradable ware.
