The days are beginning to cool off, the pace of life is picking up and the kids are heading back to school! It must be fall! Perhaps for you, this is also the beginning of the fall entertainment cycle! What better time to think about how to decorate for those fun moments with friends and family? As you begin planning for this season, you’ll want to reflect your style, taste, and favorite activities in terms of your home’s flow, color schemes, materials you’ll use and even the furniture that supports all your activities. Let’s start with flow. Go With the Flow You can help your guests feel more ‘at home’ and comfortable by creating consistent design flow throughout your home and there are many ways to achieve this. Simply bringing in complimentary hues and shades of a particular color helps the flow of the entire home. Introduce accent pieces and furnishings such as pillows, rugs, art and even perhaps a sculptured piece of art to set the tone. Selecting fabrics for furniture and other soft treatments may also bring in the opportunity to repeat your choice of color or compliment the design you are trying to achieve. So often, our clients are afraid of color and then there are those who are saturated in color. Finding the correct balance of color can be challenging. Try to remember, making a statement your home is a key element to good design. Another technique that adds cohesiveness in your design is keeping the wood trim molding around doors and windows the same throughout the home. This goes for your choice of baseboards, crown molding, and doors. Architectural details if not over done make subtle decorative distinctions that help to enhance the overall design. Once you’ve achieved the overall design for your home, you can turn your attention to a few specific centers of activity that will bring both you and your guests hours of enjoyment! That’s Entertainment! Although the larger entertainment centers that housed oversized television and components are a thing of the past, the entertainment area qualifies as one of the most important spaces in the entire home. Most of us still want the large television screen but with a cleaner, fresher approach. Today’s television and entertainment areas are just that! Another key factor to consider is the size and shape of the room and the size of the wall an entertainment center may sit against. Two additional points should be considered; you will need to consider where the natural focal points in the room are, and the way your new entertainment center will complement the design rather than compete with the natural focal points in the room. Here comes the balancing act! The seating arrangement is an important element in your entertainment area. A few important considerations include maximizing comfort, providing optimal viewing for all and minimizing the amount of space each recliner, sofa, loveseat and ottoman may occupy. You will want to find that balance between making the room feel crowded and not having enough space to support your entertainment system. You’ll also want to consider the type of atmosphere you want your living room to convey; options range from rustic to casual, elegant and even formal. Your options are endless! Entertaining With Spirit! Creating the perfect atmosphere for your wine cellar or bar will depend upon the style of your home. From an English Pub to a 1940’s Hollywood Glitz and Glamour, a French Chateau and anything in between, there is a perfect design that will eloquently complement your exact taste in style. Interior Affairs has the ability to creatively design even the smallest spaces to incorporate an atmosphere to entertain your guests when it comes to spirits! With such an array of material selection, there is no end to the possibilities. First, let’s begin with a check off list so that your wine cellar or bar project will have the best end results to satisfy you and your guests. 1. How often will you be entertaining? 2. Who will be your guests? 3. How many guests do you anticipate entertaining at one time? 4. Do you need refrigeration, or just dry storage? 5. Will you be serving food? 6. Does your space allow a sitting area as well as storage? 7. Have you considered your style? 8. Don’t forget to think about the budget! Once you’ve settled these considerations, you can begin thinking more about the design and atmosphere you want to create. Lighting is a key element in creating the right mood for relaxation and entertaining guests. Striking affects can be achieved with proper material selections for lighting fixtures, flooring, wall décor, accessories and furniture. Used in appropriate combinations, these materials create a layering affect that dramatically achieve the perfect atmosphere you desire.
