ILAC method is a simple method formulated to tackle a law paper. This method has been used over and over by both law students and practicing professionals. The law case should be written in a logical way. Some law students lack the necessary study skills and exposures when asked to analyze a law case using ILAC method. ILAC helps a student to make sure that the right applications and arguments are used and in the right context. ILAC stands for issue, law, application or argument and conclusion. This can be applied in legal case analysis in the following ways: Issue: State the issue. This is usually the question that you are required to answer as asked by the instructor. It should be a simple statement of what will be answered in the question. Law: Law refers to the different statutes that are applicable to a given case. These are relevant laws that will guide you in analyze the case. It is also important to give previous cases and showing how the rulings forms precedent for consequent rulings on the issue. When referring to a previous case, make sure you give the background to the case, the statutes applied, and the legal argument that helped in arriving at the decision. Because most law assignments have limited words to answer a question, make sure you refer to on only relevant laws, statues, and cases. In this section, do not mention anything about your present case. The discussion centers on the current case you are analyzing and how it is guided by status, laws, and cases you discussed above.
