In this article, I will talk about the most common term used when a disk fails also known as hard drive clicking. I will spread light on all situations related to storage device clicking. The disk stopped working. It is clicking and you want to recover it. You think what to do and what could be the problem. Some think clicking problem is due to failure of read, write heads. If a disk is clicking, it really depends if it is external or internal disk. External disks sometimes click because of insufficient power supplied by the power supply or the board that communicates between the power source and the disk. Sometimes it could be the internal software that controls the internal operations of the media. Some times a disk will click when one or more heads have reading problem. So the big question is, what is the solution to this kind of clicking? Before I jump into the solution, there are some more facts to talk about storage media clicking is very unique and cannot be mixed with some other clicking. Some computer’s CD drive makes similar click sound. Sometime, the computer fan can make a sound that is close to clicking. There are two ways to identify the problem, one to bring the computer to a data recovery expert and the other one is to remove the media and connect it to a USB enclosure and by connecting it to another computer. If there is still a clicking, that means the disk has problem. At this stage, it is critical to make the right decision. If the data is critical, then the owner of the disk needs to sit and think how to deal with the situation. Many go online to find a solution but the problem is, there are thousands of people giving all kinds of advices online. Many of them don’t even think about the seriousness of the problem and will give any kind of advice. Very few will warn users not to try anything if data is important. Users at this point don’t know how risky and dangerous the situation can be. So they follow poor advices on the web and watch You Tube and ultimately do things that are absolutely disastrous for data. Many would even open the failed media without proper tools and clean environment. While talking to several such users, they told us that they opened it in clean room and that clean room was one of the rooms in the house. Wow that is not a clean room, that room is full of invisible dust. When this happen and they run the disk, the heads can literally get destroyed making permanent damage on the platter’s surface making the media unrecoverable. By taking it to an experienced and reputable place, the user increases the chance of data recovery. This is especially true when some heads are just weak. Professional knows how to such situation. This can be done with proper tools and by those who are expert of professional data recovery. Some time customers use think that disk repair will bring their data back. This is not true all the time. They don’t know one fact that, data recovery is not just repairing the disk by replacing parts but the actual data recovery process involves two steps. The first one is fixing the patient media by replacing defecting parts like fixing electronics and replacing heads. The real recovery process starts after the disk is repaired in the first step. This is the step that takes time, needs proper tools and obviously experience and technical skill is required in both steps. A lot of times customers make this assumption that repairing a disk is just like repairing a computer which is totally wrong. It is not that simple and straight forward. A computer can be rebuilt or replaced with another one but if disk is destroyed, the data also goes with it. It is therefore highly recommended to take the failing device to a data recovery professional that can do the job properly. Yes it costs money but it’s worth it because once the data is gone, money cannot bring it back.
