Cycle Like a Champion: Taking the Routes Less Travelled

Travel & Tourism
You practically live on your bike. You push your body to the limit, only to pedal further and faster. You’ll cycle where only the boldest dare-devils have ever cycled before. Sound familiar? For all the heroic bikers out there, I’ve put together some great tips for how to really get your adrenaline going. Get ready to grab your helmet, tube kit, and your annual multi-trip travel insurance, and go on the thrill ride of your life on these four absolutely amazing biking routes.

The Atlas Traverse, Morocco

Up for a ride in extreme weather conditions? Then you won’t be able to get enough of the jagged roads of Morocco. On this varied trip, you’ll be able to see, do, and explore to your heart’s content. For example, you can take a small detour from the route and experience the hustle and bustle of city life in Marrakech, whose bazaars and Turkish baths will entice you to let your inner shopaholic run wild for a few hours. When you manage to drag yourself away, you’ll be in for the ultimate adventure in the High Atlas Mountain Range’s untamed territory, which will take your idea of ‘challenging’ to a whole new level. You’ll also want to push yourself to pedal through the striking Dades Valley and ascend the niveous summit of Mount Toubkal. Along the way, be sure to interrupt your epic feats to explore the Berber establishment of Imilchil, whose breathtaking lakes are true hidden gems.

Dead Sea to Red Sea, Jordan

If you’re both a bike and a rollercoaster enthusiast, you’ll be blown away by this incredible route. Seriously, how can you not seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand on top of Mount Nebo, where you’ll have a stunning view on the Promised Land, and then cycle all the way down to 418 metres below sea level (the earth’s lowest altitude)? Just when you think that this steep route can’t get any better, you’ll also be able to discover the famous Al Karak Castle in Jordan, along with ticking one of the Seven World Wonders off of your list when you see Petra.

The Great Ocean Road, Australia

Did you know that the Great Ocean Road is the biggest WWI memorial worldwide? If you’re an avid biker, but really a beach bum at heart, biking along this coastal road is the best way of experiencing a 150-mile adventure with a hint of leisure. You’ll also be able to see the illustrious rock formation of the Twelve Apostles. Not so shabby, eh?

Lake Titicaca to Machu Picchu, Peru

This route is definitely not for the weak, but will challenge the bravest and fittest to bike at extremely high altitudes. You’ll start your route on Lake Titicaca’s shoreline, which – at an impressive 3812 metres – will not only make your heart leap, but is also the world’s highest navigable water body. If you’ve always envied the photos that everyone snaps when they visit the Incan fortress of Machu Picchu, this route is your chance to create your own memories at a whooping 2,430 metres above sea level. While crossing through the Altiplano, make sure that biking between two llamas doesn’t leave you llamanated (get it?)! But if you are, at least you’ll have your annual multi-trip travel insurance to keep you covered.

Route des Grandes Alpes, France

If you think that you’re too fit for all of these routes, you’ll think again after you’ve given the Route des Grandes Alpes a whirl. From Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean, you’re in for a 400-mile journey, consisting of long, uphill stretches, such as the 30-mile ascent to the peak of Col de l’Iseran. Do you dare to face the challenge, seasoned bikers?

Before you set off on a route, please make sure that you have all of the essentials: Helmet, tube kit, and, of course, insurance. Since many insurance policies do not account for cycling, why not opt for Let’s Go Insure’s annual multi-trip travel insurance? With us, you can say goodbye to extra fees for adventurous biking – we’re here for you during your most daring of feats!
