The medical tourism in India has a bright prospect of breaking into the top 20 percent barrier of India’s contributors towards the GDP. Already there has been a change in plan towards the growth of health tourism. Medical services in India and the other countries of the subcontinent have increased their medical fraternity in magnitude and prevented the outflow of doctors to the States and parts of Europe by providing better incentives and annual packages. For now, India is ranked third among the accelerating tourism industries over the next decade or so. According to the Section 1.6 of the Tourism report, “Welcome cards for distribution at immigration counters to people arriving in India were introduced with few guidelines on how to make their stay more safe and comfortable.” Among these tourists are many medical tourists too. In those welcome cards, various details regarding medical visa, medical services in India etc. are mentioned which provide a great amount of help to these people who come from far off countries in search of better and less expensive medical hospitality. The healthcare agencies have invested a mighty sum to see to the fact that medical infrastructure is improved and that they comply with the international standards of Joint Commission Accreditation for Hospital Organizations (JCAHO). Until now, The Joint Commission International (JCI), an accreditation for the meeting of international standards, regulated by the JCAHO, have accredited 21 Indian hospitals to have complied with the international standards of medical healthcare. These include medical Goliaths like Apollo Gleneagles, Escorts and other government aided Medical centers (for e.g. AIIMS). 21 may be a low number as of now but with the government opening up new medical centers, as mentioned in the 2018 budget, it is expected that the amount of hospitals meeting the standard benchmark crosses the 50 mark by the fall of 2020. Therefore, India is at an upper hand in rising to the top brackets when it comes to developing as a medical tourism superpower in the coming years.
