It's Show Time: Top West End Shows for School Trips

Travel & Tourism,Travel & Tourism,Education,Advice
School residential trips in London have so much scope in terms of learning outside of the classroom. With a plethora of culture and history on its doorstep, London is a wonderful city for youngsters of all ages to visit, especially in the context of a school trip.

When you think of London, the theatre is one of the main attractions that come to mind. In my opinion, school residential trips based in the city should definitely take advantage of the incredible array of plays and musicals that it offers. Apart from inspiring a love of drama and music, your youngsters will enjoy a whole host of accessible storylines and have the opportunity to appreciate different musical scores.

Best West End Plays for School Trips

Matilda

This fabulous production, performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company, is an adaptation from the book by Roald Dahl. Combining wonderful music from Tim Minchin and theatrics that will have your pupils engrossed from start to finish, this show is one not to miss. As this classic story is brought to life, children will love how Matilda uses her special powers to teach the adults a lesson.

Aladdin

A magical version of Disney’s Aladdin features all the songs your students know and love. Children can follow the story as Aladdin is granted three wishes from the Genie he discovers in an old lamp. As he carries out his quest to win the beautiful Princess Jasmine, a lovely fairytale mesmerises, thrills and captivates the audience. Watch this incredible show unfold, all while marvelling at the intricate costumes and spellbinding sets.

The Lion King

Bringing the Disney film to the stage, some of cast of this popular musical are puppets that represent 25 species of animals. Showcasing the well-known soundtrack with songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, the show incorporates the recognisable dance and rhythms of Africa – and definitely has the wow factor.

Wicked

Discover the story of the two witches we know to be Glenda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz. Once great friends, the tale of these two sorceresses has remained untold until now – and things are not quite as you may have originally believed them to be. Find out for yourself why this show has received more than 100 international awards.

School of Rock

This delightful story tells the tale of a wannabe rock star who worms his way into teaching at a top-class private school. While there, he encounters a class of youngsters who are musically gifted. As he transforms the class into a rock band, a story unfolds that fuses lots of laughs with excellent music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. A super family show for children of all ages.

For any teachers planning school residential trips, I suggest contacting a company that specialises in educational school travel. Once you have gotten in touch with the experts, you can rest assured that all of your educational and logistical requirements will be accommodated. You can then concentrate on making the trip as fun and as memorable as it can be.

John Gardiner is the Managing Director of The School Travel Company, a tour operator specialising in school residential trips for school and youth groups to the UK, Europe and beyond. As a father and avid traveller, John is very passionate about providing students with valuable and engaging learning experiences outside of the classroom. By sharing his expert advice with teachers, he allows them to inspire their students and bring their studies to life.
