Maintaining A Healthy Lifestyle While Studying Abroad

studying abroad. London offers an unbeatable experience for international students, and Sophie has many suggestions to make sure that their time in the city is positive, safe and enjoyable.">Studying abroad provides so many excellent opportunities, from exploring a brand new culture to getting to know some unique and interesting people. There’s no end to the exciting adventures ahead, but alongside all the thrills, it’s important to maintain a healthy body and a healthy mind.

These handy tips are sure to give you some inspiration as to how you can make the most of student living while looking after yourself in the best and most cost-effective ways possible…

Physical Health and a Balanced Diet

When studying abroad it can be difficult to prioritise physical health, but it’s something that you must keep in mind. Even a few hours a week of light exercise can massively boost your mental wellbeing as well as keep you fit. You could even make the simple transition from public transport to walking or cycling when you’re on your way to classes.

Eating well can also be tough, especially when you’re on a budget, but there are a number of cheap and cheerful ways to sustain a balanced diet. Taking your own lunches into college or university is a great way to monitor what you eat and avoid distractions from nearby cafes or fast-food chains. Other money-saving solutions include preparing joint meals with the people sharing your accommodation, or making sure to shop per week rather than per day.

Enjoy Companionship

Whether you’re staying in halls of residence or some of the other available accommodation options, the people you are living with will most likely become an important part of your student experience. Having a close network of friends is a huge part of maintaining a positive mind-set, particularly if you’re feeling overwhelmed or missing home.

Going out with friends is an effective stress-reliever and makes for a memorable student experience. It also gives you a chance to explore your new environment and make the most of your diverse and exciting surroundings. Plus, finding low-cost (or free) attractions and events while studying abroad can be easier than you might think.

Take Time to Sleep

It’s easy to get caught up in the stresses and excitements of your new life, and a consistent sleeping pattern can sometimes take a back seat. Making sure you have enough sleep each night can massively improve your mental wellbeing – if you’re a light sleeper, try an eye mask, earplugs or black-out blinds. You must also make sure to turn off any electronics before sleeping as this makes more a much more peaceful snooze.

Studying abroad is a life-changing experience, but it doesn’t mean you should overlook your physical and mental health. Hopefully these tips have encouraged you to take more time to look after yourself while settling in your new environment.
