Superhero movies are big money right now and have been for about twenty years. In fact, with the exception of a few big movie premiers here and there, the biggest movie blockbusters in recent memory have had to do with “supers”. Even though there are a lot of people who love these movies and do all they can to follow every part of a particular comic universe (e.g., Marvel or DC), there are actually a lot of people that have never watched one of these films. This can be for a number of reasons. Maybe they’re not big fans of comic books. Perhaps they like movies that are grounded in reality. You may even have folks that like their movies a bit on the independent side, with quirkiness in droves. The thing is that for these individuals, finding a movie that doesn’t involve a superhero is getting harder to do. If you happen to be stepping into the foray of superhero movies for the first time, here is a brief guide to help you navigate the choppy waters of this film genre: Understand the Origin Story — A superhero’s origin story is everything to them and to the fans of the character. If there were ever one major criticism of blockbuster “super” movies, it’s that they often ignore, glaze over, or simply rehash a character’s origin story. This, in effect, makes the character someone else entirely. Good vs Bad — It’s all about the eternal struggle of good vs bad. At times, the line between the two can blur, but very rarely does this happen. Usually, something profound comes from the battles between these factions, teaching the rest of us “normies” more about being human than we’ve been capable of exemplifying ourselves. For being superhuman, they really know how to rub it in. Constant Internal Struggle — Superheroes deal with some serious issues, regardless of the accolades they receive for their good deeds. Death, abandonment, and an inability to find peace are at the center of most of these characters’ issues, but they have to suppress this turmoil to do their job. They’ll Never Be Like Us — You’re dealing with superheroes, and by default, they are superhuman and will never be like you or me. Not only should we understand this, but these characters are constantly reminded of it. The same world that asks for their help is also quick to cast them aside for being different. If you are a newbie when it comes to superhero movies, you’ve got a lot of territory to cover as some of these characters are nearly a century old. So, before you decide to spend your money for a ticket to a movie you may not like, get a little more acquainted with the source material. You don’t necessarily have to become an expert, but it does help to give you some insight into the story of these characters. You may just find yourself a new favorite movie genre.
