Menorca is an island rich in historical treasures, and you'll be able to discover many of them if you stay in one of the villas in San Jaime. Inhabited for many centuries, the island boasts a plethora of ancient towns and treasures and, in fact, the history is one of the reasons many people choose to visit Menorca. Often you will be able to see these historic sites without having to share them with too many other tourists, which makes them even more appealing. One of the best historical sites on the island is Torre d'en Galmés. Here is a bit of background information on this important site if you're planning a visit during your stay in the villas in San Jaime. An Ancient Talayotic Site Torre d'en Galmés is an ancient Talayotic site located between Son Bou and Alaior, making it very easy to visit by car or on an organised tour if you're staying nearby in one of the villas in San Jaime. The site dates back as far as 1400 BC (and most of it now lies in ruins), but there are still many interesting features to explore. It was an important town, which expanded over the years, and, for a period of time, was one of the largest in the Balearic Islands. However, once the Romans occupied the island, the town was abandoned. Discover the Fascinating Features Situated on a small hill, the site provides splendid views over the southern coast of the island and across to Majorca, which makes it well worth the visit even if you're more interested in natural beauty than history. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the town is its three talayots – large stone towers that were used as watchtowers. You can also see the old defence walls as well as some other fortified walls. There are many remains of houses dotted around, which are made of large stones built around a 'patio' in the centre. Another one of the interesting features of the site is the water conservation system. Highly sophisticated and very well preserved, it comprises of a system of underground cisterns, which are then connected by channels. You'll see the remains of this innovative system (it was quite advanced for its time) in the southern areas of the site. Soak Up the Many Attractions of Menorca Menorca has so many attractions, including beaches, great activities and a host of historic sites. It is well worth visiting, and reveals a lot about the wonderful history of this lovely island. Author Plate Brenda Jaaback is the Managing Director of Bartle Holidays.
