Keep it Cheesy: Explore Gouda and Edam While in Amsterdam

Travel & Tourism
Holland is, of course, famous for its cheese and is therefore the ideal destination for any food enthusiasts out there. One of the country’s most popular attractions are the local markets, showcasing the iconic (and very large) red and yellow cheese wheels – if you’re looking for a tasty feast, you’re in luck.

After arriving in Amsterdam following your Schiphol airport transfer, you’ll want to check out two of the country’s towns boasting some of the most iconic Dutch markets. Gouda and Edam are both famous for their cheese heritage and are also easily accessible from the capital city.

Gouda

Located in southern Holland, Gouda is a stunning destination renowned all over the world for its most famous food. Not only is its market one of the biggest in the Netherlands, it is also set in beautiful surroundings in the square which sits between De Waag and the stunning Gothic architecture of the town hall.

The Gouda market takes place on Thursday mornings between 10am and 1pm from the first weeks of April right through until the end of August. Before you book your trip, make sure to double check your dates. Enormous cheese wheels are sold at the market alongside other Dutch cuisine. There are also several souvenir stalls selling charming gifts which are perfect to take home for family and friends.

Away from the market, you’ll discover that Gouda is a beautiful town in itself. Delve into the area’s heritage at the history museum or take in the Gothic architecture as you walk through its charming streets. Before you leave, make sure that you take a trip up to the balconies of Stadhuis – there are some incredible views to enjoy from the top and it’s not too much of a climb.

Edam

A smaller and more infrequent market, Edam is often popular because it’s less crowded than others. You’ll find the Edam cheese in several different varieties, though they are usually smaller than those at the Gouda market.

This market is all about tradition; the sale of cheese wheels is always confirmed with a handshake, and the food itself is carried by two people on traditional wooden barrows.

Held most Wednesday mornings between 10:30am and 12:30pm during the months of July and August, the Edam market is not to be missed after you’ve arrived in Amsterdam.

How to Get There

Both Gouda and Edam are within easy reach of the capital. Take a flight into Schiphol airport, and pre-book a Schiphol airport transfer to take you on to your accommodation - this is the most cost-effective and convenient way to travel from the airport.

Taking you from door to door and providing you with a hassle-free journey, a Schiphol airport transfer booked in advance will make your trip as easy as cheese pie.

Cheese is one of the iconic parts of the Dutch culture, and a delicious day trip to Gouda or Edam is the perfect way to fully experience it. Book your adventure now and await some truly tasty travelling.
