On Your Bike! Amsterdam's Best Cycling Spots

Travel & Tourism
In a city that’s built better for bikes than for pedestrians, why not join the locals and spend your Dutch adventure exploring by bicycle? With an enormous network of cycling trails throughout the centre of Amsterdam, it could not be easier to get around. What’s more, with greater travel efficiency you will be able to see more than the average tourist. You’ll be able to head into the lesser-known parts of this iconic city, where you will discover exceptional natural scenery as well as urban architecture and cultural sites. Read on to be enlightened by just a handful of the places that a bike tour of the capital will take you.

With a flight time of just under an hour from London airports and several flights leaving daily, you can begin your cycling adventure whenever suits you! To ensure the simplest and least stressful experience, be sure to arrange Amsterdam airport transport to deliver you straight to your accommodation so you can get started.

Be Inspired by Ijburg

Not often visited by the average traveller, this hidden gem can be discovered by cycling to the eastern borders of the city. It is entirely manmade, which gives it an almost eerie feel, but is an undeniable display of architectural brilliance. Built upon artificial ground over the sea to accommodate for much needed living space, it has a unique civic layout owing to its premeditated nature and is unlike any other region in the Netherlands. Enjoy exploring the magnificent modern architecture that can be seen within this contemporary-looking neighbourhood, including the Nesciobrug, a bridge can cycle across to get to the west side.

Get Lost in Amsterdamse Bos

An almost inconceivable three times the size of New York’s iconic Central Park, the manmade forest Amsterdamse Bos is a force to be reckoned with. Designed in the twentieth century to serve as a suburban retreat for local residents to break the monotony of the urban metropolis, it contains wild grasslands, wooded paths and artificial lakes and rivers. It is well connected, and you may cycle its scenic route created for bicycles and challenge yourself to its hills – a rare find in Noord-Holland.

A Day Trip to Amstel

The Amstel is the second largest body of water in Amsterdam, and its banks are home to a number of key historical buildings. Check out the Jewish Quarter, Magere Brug and Hermitage Museum, all of which are beautiful. As you cycle, you will eventually come to the charming, fairy-tale village Ouder Kerk aan de Amstel, perfect for a quaint day out and a photo opportunity or two. Continue along the picturesque route and you’ll find yourself at the famous Amstelpark. Take a picnic, marvel at the incredible flower gardens and finish off your visit with some cute fun at the petting zoo.

How to Get There

Fly from any UK city and in just over an hour you will safely touch down at Amsterdam airport. Transport into the city is easy via a pre-booked transfer, which is highly recommended to save you trying to make sense of the complex metro system! Your Amsterdam airport transport will be waiting just outside of the building and is by far the quickest and easiest method of finishing off your holiday arrival journey.

Make sure your biking legs are prepared for your next big trip because you’ll be needing them!
