When choosing your student residence, London can seem overwhelming – but it doesn’t have to be. While there are lots of things to consider (including the cost, the distance to your classes and what each area has to offer in terms of culture and nightlife) it’s not too tricky to find your perfect location. A city this big has so many areas boasting different characteristics, so working out what’s best for you is vital. Could your perfect accommodation be Colindale, in the North West borough of Barnet? Colindale: Past and Present In the past, this corner of the city was mostly empty of residential and cultural life. All that stood here was manufacturing, warehouses, the RAF base and some basic housing for local workers. Eventually, people started to see the potential in this area – terraced houses were constructed and soon, the residential area we see today was built. As well as being an attractive place to choose for your student residence, London’s part in The Avengers: Age of Ultron was filmed in this pleasant corner of the city. See if you can spot the famous place and snap a selfie or two. The Great Outdoors While Colindale puts you in a wonderful location for access to the city centre, it provides a number of brilliant outdoor spaces as well. Smaller parks like the one next to the station are great for spending time with friends, while bigger spaces like Heybourne gives you the chance to spot wildlife in an idyllic setting. Whether you’ll prefer playing sport in Rushgrove Park or admiring the landscape in Silkstream Park, Colindale’s outdoor spaces are not to be missed. Plus, they’re located right next to the student residence. London and countryside combined! Fantastic Transport Links Colindale’s station is served by the historic Northern Line and gets you into central London in only thirty minutes. In Zone 4, the area is served by a number of busses including the 186, 204 and 303, which should all help you get around the city without any problems. Culture and History The RAF museum is located in Colindale and is a worthwhile place for a visit for anybody interested in history. There are interactive exhibits and lots of impressive aircraft on show. Like many of London’s museums, this one is absolutely free. Food, Food, Food! Like Colindale itself, the food scene in the area is expanding rapidly. As well as the convenience of the supermarkets in the area, there are great restaurants and the spectacular Asian Food Court. Bang Bang Oriental is the city’s largest Asian food court and has more than 25 outlets for you to choose from. Although sometimes you’ll want to cook in your student residence, London’s fantastic food scene being right outside your front door will be hard to resist. With so many great amenities and a constantly expanding range of shops and restaurants, Colindale is a great choice for any student looking to experience the life of a local Londoner. Excellent parks, transport links and culture make this spot of the city a real hidden gem. It probably won’t stay hidden for too long though!
