Ideas for Adult Focussed Days Out on the Isle of Wight

Travel & Tourism
Finding a new destination for relaxing adult weekends away is always a challenge. The location has to be close enough not to have to waste valuable time travelling, offer a great range of accommodation and, most importantly, have enough attractions to keep you occupied for two or three days. Hard ask? Well, it can be, but if you look to the UK there are plenty of places that fill the bill perfectly – and one of them is the beautiful Isle of Wight.

Adult Weekends on the Isle of Wight

While it’s certainly a destination with wide appeal for families, there’s a host of adult-oriented attractions as well – and possibly even more than you’d imagine! Here’s a selection of just a few ideas to get you started, so pack a bag, fill up your car and get ready to fall in love with the Isle of Wight.

Tip: If you want to escape the crowds and have the places more to yourself, you’d be advised to plan your adult weekends out of school holiday periods or avoid the more family-focused attractions.

Churches and Chapels

For those interested in history, there are a good number of charming churches, chapels and historical religious buildings dotted around the island. While there are too many to mention individually, they include:

St. Lawrence Old Church: billed as one of Britain’s smallest churches Quarr Abbey: a Benedictine monastery still in use All Saint’s Godshill: an iconic picture perfect image used on many a fudge box St. Mildred’s Whippington: where you can warm the same pew as Queen Victoria

Museums

The beauty of the island’s small museums and galleries is that they are so manageable. Their size means you won’t lose a whole day when you visit and you can fit several in even if you only want to dedicate a few hours to museum-hopping. Consider:

The Donald Gill Museum (full of quirky facts and memorabilia) The Museum of Island History The Classic Boat Museum The Wight Military and Heritage Museum

Tour the Vineyards and Food Producers

There’s quite the foodie scene on the island and there are plenty of places you can go to sample the local produce at the source. While naturally there’s a heavy focus on seafood, there’s also a burgeoning chilli and garlic industry, for example.

There are two local wine growers worth visiting, and while the Rosemary Vineyard and Adgeston Vineyard aren’t going to put the French and Italians out of business, they do produce a decent drop.

This is just a snapshot of what your weekend away could look like and there’s lots of other activities you might want to try, including the local steam railway, golf, some gentle hiking, a visit to Bembridge Windmill, numerous lush parks and gardens and several historic houses.

A weekend might not be enough…

Get Ready to Go

Rather than waste time planning your own itinerary when you’ve only got a short amount of time, it’s a good idea to enlist the help of a specialist tour operator when booking your adult weekends. These companies often have excellent deals on breaks to the Isle of Wight that incorporate themed music events at the renowned Warner Norton Grange, for example. Sit back and let someone else take care of your accommodation and entertainment details so you just have to show up and relax!
