Wander the Lively Local Markets of Malaga

Travel & Tourism
The picturesque port city of Malaga is a wonderful place to explore solo. Thanks to the warm climate, plenty of local street markets have sprung up over the years in this vibrant Costa del Sol capital, and they promise the perfect way to immerse in authentic local life and taste signature Spanish cuisine. Here are just a few to consider. Ataranzanas The most popular shopping destination in the area is the Atarazanas and the venue is brimming with history. Situated in the remnants of a fourteenth-century shipyard, the entrance is in fact a beautiful archway, and the only piece to survive from the original seven arch structure. As if that weren’t already enough, the Atarazanas also served time as a convent after the Catholic monarchs seized Malaga in 1487, and has even been used for purposes as diverse as a military fort and a medical school. Now, the locals enjoy relaxing by its colourful stained glass window and indulging in seafood and delicious, deep-fried Malagueño-style tapas. Cortijo de Torres People in the know flock to this flea market from all over the province in the hopes of happening across the perfect second-hand treasure. From books to records to clothes to furniture, Cortijo de Torres is bound to surprise you with a unique find. Just be prepared to work your way through its bustling midday crowds! Soho The heart of Soho, the neighbourhood known for hosting Andalusia’s most exciting street art, also prides itself on running Malaga’s best arts and crafts market on the first Saturday of each month. Its collection of stalls features work from sculptors, painters, photographers and designers local to the area. Handily situated in the centre of town, the stalls are just a stone’s throw from the street art forming the Malaga Art Urbano Soho project, which has transformed previously run-down facades into some of the city’s most inspiring contemporary art installations. El Zoco de Muelle Uno If you want to get a feel for the local culture while enjoying an idyllic view of some of Malaga’s main landmarks, don’t miss out on El Zoco de Muelle Uno’s gourmet cuisine, decorative items and handmade goods. The stalls are covered with shady canopies in the summer, and offer the perfect way to spend your time between stops at the neighbourhood’s beaches and museums. Mercado El Carmen A must-stop location for those with a taste for seafood is Mercado El Carmen, a recently revamped food market known for its busy bargaining and social atmosphere. Many of the locals claim that Carmen boasts the best fish stalls in the area. This is no doubt thanks to the fact that the market is actually located in the old El Perchel neighbourhood, so named after the perchas hooks on which fisherman would hang the day’s catch out to dry. As one of Malaga’s oldest districts, visiting this El Perchel market will give you a true taste of what life was like before the region became a tourist hotspot. Plaza Merced For the best of Malaga’s new and second-hand products, be sure to venture to the market here and the famous birthplace of Pablo Picasso. The jewellery, books, bags and clothes on offer are sold on the last Sunday of every month against the sunny backdrop of terraces and the Lagunillas neighbourhood street art. How to Get There If you don’t want to be faced with navigating complicated public transport routes or negotiating with overpriced taxi services immediately upon arrival in Malaga, airport transfers offer the easiest way to make sure the start to your holiday remains hassle-free. By pre-booking your Malaga airport transfer before you leave home, you’ll receive door-to-door service and be guaranteed that you’ll still have the time and energy to get the most out of exploring the vicinity once you’re all settled in. Malaga has many authentic market highlights that you wouldn’t want to miss out on during your trip. If you want to get to know the people and the culture, there really is no better way to go about it. Author Plate
