Fabulous Foodie Fun in the Glorious Chianti Region of Tuscany

Travel & Tourism,Food & Beverages
Italy and gastronomy go hand in hand and nowhere is that expectation higher than in Tuscany, a destination renowned for its outstanding locally produced food and wine. While it’s pretty hard to find a bad (authentic) meal in Tuscany, the Chianti region is arguably the best of a pretty magnificent bunch when it comes to amazing food.

Of all the things to do in Chianti, sampling the fresh produce, wines and traditional cuisine of the region is among the most popular. Whether you join a day trip for a gastronomy themed tour, or you go it alone and make some wonderful discoveries for yourself, if you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve got some delicious ideas.

Fabulous Foodie Fun

From munching on homemade cannoli out of a hole-in-the-wall café to five-star fine dining, the diversity of food here is a huge part of its appeal. And, while there are the staple favourites, it certainly pays to keep an open mind and a willingness to try anything.

Michelin Starred Magic

In amongst the plethora of hearty peasant food, pastas and pizzas, you might not immediately consider this part of the world would be renowned for fine dining. But when it comes to things to do in Chianti, there’s actually a very good selection of Michelin-starred restaurants (there are 35 in total in the wider Tuscan region). One that’s garnered a reputation for its sublime food and ambience is Da Caino, holder of not one but two of the coveted stars. Set in the charming town of Montemerano, chef and owner Valeria Piccini serves up her own unique take on authentic Tuscan cuisine. While the menu is, at times, daring, it never veers from its dedication to refined excellence.

Gelato, Gelato!

How does humble gelato make it on to a ‘foodie experience’ list? When it’s the best in the world, that’s how! A visit to San Gimignano is high on the list of things to do in Chianti, but while it’s stepped in history and culture, it’s also steeped in pride for its award-winning gelato! There are countless places you can get a fix of this frozen favourite, but with its title of ‘World’s Best Gelato’, Gelateria Dondoli is well worth seeking out. The shop is run by a former world champion gelato maker, Sergio Dondoli, and easily lives up to its reputation, with such unique flavours as raspberry and rosemary and Madagascan vanilla and saffron.

Sampling Olive Oil

Another of the most delicious and enjoyable things to do in Chianti is to sample the diverse varieties of olive oil. No table in Italy is without this iconic product and there are countless opportunities to try a little or a lot at the source. One that’s gained a fantastic reputation for its guided tours and tastings is Fattoria Di Fubbiano, an estate in the hills of Lucca. This renowned producer of fine extra-virgin olive oils is set in a beautiful seventeenth-century villa, and not only can you learn all about the production processes and get to taste the various oils, you can even stay on site in delightful apartments.

Stunning Seafood

If you’re looking for the best seafood in Italy, it would be pretty hard to go past the many restaurants of lovely Livorno, on the Estruscan Coast. You can’t go too wrong with anywhere you choose here, but for an authentic representation of the local seafood, Cantina Senese is one of the best. Their Cacciucco a Livorno (a local version of fish stew) is legendary. The town is also home to one of Europe’s biggest covered markets, so if you prefer to do it yourself you can stock up on just-caught seafood and get ready to make your taste-buds sing!

These are just a few of the food-related things to do in Chianti – but there are countless more. Every day can be an adventure for your palate if you’re prepared to step out of your comfort zone just a little. Open wide and get ready to eat your way around Tuscany!

Author Plate Mauro Bramante is the Director of WalkAbout Florence, an independent business offering unforgettable tours and excursions around Italy including the best things to do in Chianti. Whether you want to ride a Vintage Vespa, try the famous Chianti wine or get cooking with fresh local ingredients, Mauro's company promises excitement, adventure and above all, fun. If you're keen to experience the magic of Italy with the help of some passionate and knowledgeable tour guides, look no further than WalkAbout Florence for your next getaway.
