What You Didn't Know About Historical Barcelona

Travel & Tourism
Barcelona has it all for couples with a penchant for class, culture and finesse. With museums, theatres and galleries galore (not to mention exquisite cuisine), let Catalonia’s capital truly indulge your senses. Justly famous for its historical and cultural accolades, the city still has a few less well known stories to tell.

Hidden Histories

This is a city with a dramatic past. Believed to be the birth-child of Carthaginian general Barca, many say that Barcelona predates Rome itself. History indeed is reignited around every corner with many people also unaware that in the 8th century, Barcelona was held under Moorish occupation. Make sure you look out for remnants of the city’s Muslim past as you wander the historic streets.

To this day, Barcelona is proud of its Catalan heritage and independence remains a political focus. This is a city with a truly unique linguistic and cultural identity, which makes it even more special.

A Touch of Magic

Delve a little deeper and discover a different side to this city. Far beneath the cobblestones, twelve disused subway stations play host to tours of the spookier variety. For true Gaudi enthusiasts it’s an opportunity to meet the man himself, as sightings of Gaudi’s ghost are widely reported. Above ground, Barcelona’s museum of magic is the first of its kind, dating back to 1881.

Amazing Architecture

Standing at 984 meters, the Sagrada Familia is the jewel in this city’s crown. Though construction began in 1882, the building is famed for remaining incomplete to this day. Contrary to popular belief, the cathedral was not Gaudi’s creation. In fact, it was one Francisco de Paula del Villar who inaugurated this epic project, with Gaudi taking the helm only after his retirement. Controversy aside, Barcelona continues to attract architects from all over the world. True Gaudi buffs must pay a visit to the Casa Milà. Alternatively known as the “alive house”, it is famed for its naturalistic design reminiscent of a living organism.

Culture and Custom

In Catalonia’s capital, culture and custom abound. The Dìa de St Jordi is Catalonia’s very own Valentine’s day. This celebration, however, is more of a literary affair, with lovers and friends exchanging not just roses but books! For those less romantic of heart, why not revel in the city’s sporting history with a visit to the FC Barcelona museum. You’ll be in good company here with the attraction enticing in the region of 1,629,990 visitors each year!

A Few Surprises

Today, Barcelona is the beach city capital of the world, but the city’s beautiful 4.5 km coastline is in its infancy. Purpose built in 1992 using sand all the way from Egypt, the beach has been developed to include luxury hotels, beautiful bars and fabulous restaurants. The beaches coupled with the delights of the mediterranean climate help make this a city destination that has it all.

How to Get There

Ready for a visit? Getting there couldn’t be easier. Simple and hassle-free, Barcelona airport transfers can be organised prior to departure and guarantee door-to-door service. With no need to agonise over public transport or expensive taxis, arranging Barcelona airport transfers promises a pleasant and relaxing travel experience, leaving you free to make the most of every moment in this special city.
