When you are a person living with Hidradenitis suppurativa you have to learn quickly how to look after your wounds, including draining deeper ones, and preventing infection. As well as the physical care needed for cleaning and dressing wounds there are other things you can do to encourage healing such as adopting a Hidradenitis Suppurativa diet. Here is some advice for people with HS on basic wound care steps and what else you can do to promote healing with the choices you make. Three steps to basic wound care - Clean the skin - The first step with your wound is to clean it. It is important though to do this gently with something gentle in nature, unless something stronger is recommended by a doctor. Some people with HS have regular salt baths to keep their wounds nice and clean. It is important to keep them clean to prevent infection.
- Apply topical creams – Some doctors will prescribe a cream or ointment to be applied to or around the wounds. Use these as directed. These may reduce inflammation, prevent infection and reduce odor from some wounds.
- Dress the wound – Now it is time to dress your wound. A dressing should have several layers so that the inner core can absorb any fluid that comes from the wound as it is healing.
As you consider what dressing to use for your wound think about; - How easy the dressing is to put on and take off and whether it causes a lot of pain to do either.
- The cost of the dressings.
- Where the wound is and whether the dressing will fit there and stay on there.
- Is the dressing absorbent enough
Our overall health can be a factor in wound healing, and research shows that what you eat may contribute to wound healing. You might want to consider a hidradenitis suppurativa diet, rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and other essential nutrients for wound healing. Conclusion As always, follow the directions of your doctor when it comes to changing your dressings. Some might tell you to change it daily some might say every other day to avoid irritation. Should there be signs of infection, swelling, more pain or you experience a fever give them a call. Also consider making changes that encourage better healing, for example, do some gentle exercise, quit smoking, and start a healthy Hidradenitis Suppurativa diet.
