Eating Paleo on a Hidradenitis Suppurativa Diet

Business
There is a lot of talk among those with HS about whether certain foods are actual triggers of their symptoms. Hidradenitis Suppurativa also called Acne Inversa is a debilitating skin condition. The cause is not known exactly, and there is no cure. Because of that, people with HS have to look closely at things like a Hidradenitis Suppurativa diet and lifestyle adjustments so that they can do what is possible to lessen the severity and frequency of the flare-ups. For some, changing their diet has only small results. But some have better success. It also depends on the changes they make. The reason some choose to follow the Paleo Diet is that it includes lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, lean meats and no processed foods or refined sugar. There is no scientific evidence that proves that this specific diet is always effective, but people with HS say it works for them.

 The connection between HS and diet One of the main goals a person living with Hidradenitis Suppurativa has is to prevent lesions, and lessen the severity when they do flare-up. While the direct cause has not really been identified a few factors have been found to play a role including genetics, an irregular immune system response, and hormones. While weight is not a cause, it does impact on the severity of what is experienced. It has also been found that in some people some foods can be triggers. It is important to know that is different from being a cause. What you eat does not cause the condition, but it can affect how bad the flare-ups are. Controlling your weight and eating a healthy Hidradenitis Suppurativa diet can help.

Foods that can trigger symptoms or make them worse

Common trigger foods that come up among people with HS are;

  • Dairy – No milk, cheese, ice-cream, cream, yogurt and so on.
  • Added sugars – Syrups, white and brown sugars and even natural sweeteners like honey count as added sugars so avoid sweets, cakes, chocolate, pastries, cereals, sodas, but also pay closer attention to less obvious things full of sugar like salad dressings, fruit juice, and sauces.
  • Wheat – Some find cutting out wheat has had a positive impact on their symptoms, but certainly refined carbohydrates should be avoided like white bread and pasta Saturated fats – Cut back on red meats, eat more lean proteins and plant proteins.
  • Processed and fast foods – Full of sugars, refined carbs, saturated fats and all the things you need to avoid.
How a Paleo diet might help The Paleo Diet is a low-glycemic diet. It encourages eating more natural and whole foods and helps with weight control and insulin levels. This is something people with HS considering a Hidradenitis Suppurativa diet to help, are looking for. This diet includes more;
  • Healthy and lean proteins like chicken, beans and fish
  • Fruits and non-starchy vegetables like spinach, carrots, beets, broccoli, peaches, banana, apples and berries
  • Healthy sources of fat in the right small portion from things like avocados, vegetable oils, nuts and seeds, and some oily fish
