A few months ago, I was at a networking event run by, in my opinion, one of the best hosts in New York City, Roger Kuperway. Towards the end of the event, I was sitting at the bar eating some popcorn and I met a particularly hardworking man. He’s an inventor, an entrepreneur since he was a pre-teen, and primarily a musician. So music was our main topic of conversation for the night. While we were walking to the train station, we got into talking about the music industry and how artists can launch their own careers successfully. It was interesting learning about it since I knew nothing about the business side of music, and he taught me one thing that really stuck in my head. He said something along the lines of this: Artists can’t just release songs willy-nilly. They have to strategize and do a lot of backend work. A prelaunch, if you will. Before artists release a single track, they need to create their story so their listeners can better connect with their music. Otherwise they’re just going to be seen as another song about love, struggle, or whatever else topic that’s common. In business, you have to think about the same thing. Without a story, your business will be seen as just an ordinary business that’s not so different from all the other similar businesses out there. But if you give people some history behind it, that’s going to make your business a lot more interesting, unique, and relatable. That’s why I added this lesson as an appendix in "How to Become an Email Titan:" “How to Craft Your Unique Business Story That’ll Make You Shine and Put Your Competitors In the Shadows” Although it’s not directly email copywriting related, it can be useful when you write your copy for your About page or social media bio.
