I remember there was a day where someone showed me an 1-bit pixel art game called… World of Horror It takes place in a small town in Japan, Shiokawa, where you come across many unusual events and horrific characters. Like events where people fall into comas out of nowhere. Or a monster, heavily inspired by the urban legend, Bloody Mary, that’s been on a rampage killing innocent high school students. Or all of a sudden, you find out there are holes appearing on your character’s body for unknown reasons. And the text you read in the game doesn’t make the game any less scary. A lot of things I read I found extremely disturbing. I never thought an old-looking, heavily text-based game can be so creepy. But it doesn’t end there. My friend also told me I should read a short graphic novel written by a Japanese manga artist who’s known for publishing horror graphic novels. It’s called… The Enigma of Amigara Fault This particular story is about people in Japan who travel to the epicenter of a recent earthquake and find human-shaped holes scattered across the mountainside. Slowly, they start to realize that some of the holes match their body’s silhouette and grew a desire to enter inside the holes as if they were calling them. No one knows how the holes were formed and why they’re there, but it does reveal what happens when they go through. But I’m not going to spoil it here. You’re going to have to read it yourself if you want to know. But this short story isn’t the horror you typically come across. There are no scary-looking beings, no blood or gore. It’s the psychological part of the story that drives the horror, and it does so powerfully I should say. This is true when it comes to copywriting as well. When it comes to good copy, one of the main things behind its strong effect is the psychological factor. Pain is one.
