The advantages of studying abroad cannot be underestimated. There is no downside to studying overseas and the upside is huge. From studying a new language to gaining better comprehension of world politics, studying in Canada or overseas can make you a far more desirable hire to possible employers. If the person interviewing you also studied abroad, it may be the secret to creating that connection together that sets you apart from others. Below are four things that you will learn abroad that will set you apart from the classmates who do not study overseas. You may learn and understand a new culture 1. You will learn and understand a new culture Doing business with someone is always tricky, but doing it with an individual or business in a different country is much more difficult. A new language quicker than taking a class Your normal language class meets for 45 hours each semester. Your ordinary day overseas involves 16 hours a day of immersion in a language that is new. In 3 days abroad you listen to and are immersed in a language more than you are in a course for a whole semester! It's also much easier to learn a language when it is being used in ordinary day-to-day situations. It's true that you can learn the basics by reading a textbook or listening to a teacher, but nothing will make you comprehend a language better than being immersed in it. You may learn to be patient and flexible 4. Learn to be flexible and patient The two items that everyone who studies overseas learns to master are patience and flexibility. Not everyone in the world eats dinner at 6 pm, or gets hot water all day long, or comes with a drier. So, you learn how to adapt and be flexible in your situation. Part of the adaptation involves a rather significant level of patience, so as in the U.S. you'd probably be pretty upset if you didn't have hot water! Employees who are flexible and patient are a boon to each boss. There's nothing a supervisor hates over an employee who can't easily change gears or sit back and wait for. Remember that studying abroad not just increases your worth as a possible asset to your future employers but expands your view around the earth too.
