Dental implant treatment is a procedure in which a tooth or teeth is fixed to the jaw with help of an implant. this implant is a titanium-based post used in this procedure. The titanium post is inserted in the jawbone below the gums which works as a tooth root. Then a crown is attached on the top of the implant so that it looks like a natural tooth and gives a natural look. this treatment is done when one is facing an issue with missing teeth/tooth at any point in life. The surgery or procedure is done on a large scale in India over these past years. it helps to change the look of an individual completely. It consists of various steps while performing this procedure. Symptoms There are the following symptoms after which it is decided to perform a dental implant. Speech issues Dysphagia Previous history of cavities Improper treatment of tooth cavity Cracked tooth Gum disease Weak tooth Untreated missing tooth Pain in facial muscles of the jaw Causes tooth loss due to: accident trauma tooth cavity/decay gum disease poor oral hygiene untreated tooth Types 1. Endosteal implants: These are the commonly used implants. these implants are placed inside the jawline. it consists of 3 shapes: cylinder, blade, and screw. 2. Subperiosteal implants: This is an alternative to endosteal implants. but it is not the same as an endosteal implant. it consists of a metal plate that is inserted in the jawline just below the gum tissue. 3. Zygomatic implants: This is the least common type of implant. it is very rarely advised. the implant is inserted in the cheekbone, instead of a jawbone. it is a painful procedure as compared to the other two implants. Treatment The dental implant treatment starts with prescribing medicines for pain relief and avoid infection during the procedure. The doctor starts with pain killers like for example ibuprofen and also with antibiotics like amoxicillin. Before treatment blood tests are performed to diagnose the patient with any other disease like diabetes. accordingly, the treatment is given. The procedure includes the following steps- I. Placing the implant- Here the jawbone is prepared like the surgeon makes a cut in the jaw to cut open the bone and make a drill so that a hole is made for the implant to be placed so it acts like a root for the tooth. II. Healing- This phase takes about 3-6 months depending upon the strength of the jawbone of an individual. here the implant fuses with the jawbone so that it gives a natural effect to the tooth. III. Abutment placement- This step is done only after the healing of bone is complete. in this step, the wound is reopened and a soft cushion-like crown is attached to the implant so that it stresses the soft tissues which help in healing further. IV. Permanent crown placement- Here the focus is mainly on making the permanent crown look like a natural tooth. before procedure A. Patient is asked to have a soft diet like liquids B. Blood test to diagnose for any other disease C. Consent of patient and relative D. Preparation of medicines E. Instruments are arranged F. Sterilization of the surrounding area G. Administration of anesthesia after procedure Wound touching should be avoided. No spitting or rinsing of mouth/wound on the day after surgery. No touching the metal implant A gauze pad is placed on the wound to avoid oozing blood. More intake of liquid diet but avoiding the hot beverages Start the medications as instructed by the surgeon Good oral hygiene should be maintained that is brushing teeth twice a day. Use of soft brush. Change the brush every 2-2 months after use. Mouth rinse after meal once a day at least. No consumption of tobacco or smoking Avoid sticky food that may attract more bacteria. Recovery Recovery of the complete dental implant surgery may take 6-8 months depending upon the strength of the jaw bone and also the way oral hygiene is maintained. Along with the procedure the medicines are to be taken regularly so that the healing is appropriate. the healing of the implant takes about 3-6 months which again depends upon the jawbone of the patient.
