I did some self-copywriting training over the weekend. I was listening to a video recording of a seminar speech by Gary Bencivenga, who is often referred to as America’s Best Copywriter. In one of his speech segments, he talked about how to improve your copywriting skills, or any skill for that matter. The best way to do that is by doing something every week to improve at least 1%. And as weeks, months, and years go by, that improvement will compound, and eventually, you’ll achieve a master level. When it comes to copywriting, Gary Bencivenga suggested following his “Ad a Day” program, where you read one good ad per day. You can do the same with emails or sales letters. Find people who are good at writing email copy, sign up for their email list, and study their emails. Study sales letters of popular products sold online. But don’t just read and then move on with your day. That’s not how you’ll truly learn. And you see this happening with almost all students in school. Almost everything they read and study eventually goes out of their brain. The only way information or a skill is retained is by doing. That’s why I said to not just read and stop there. Put the things you learn into practice, and the more you do, the better you’ll get. And depending on how often you practice, the faster you’ll improve as well. And yes, failure is inevitable. There’s going to be work you produce that will be terrible. I bet even the greatest copywriters like Gary Bencivenga wrote copy that bombed. I’m sure the best musicians wrote terrible songs. The best writers probably put out terrible books. The best sketch artists probably drew human figures that look mutated. The most famous athletes were probably told they sucked at one point in their career. Point being, regardless of the inevitable failures, as long as you’re consistent with practicing your skills, you will eventually reach the level of success you’re striving for.
