Wearing appropriate protection during contact sports play or potentially dangerous activities is something to be definitely mindful of. Do you like hard candy, chewing on ice or maybe even biting your nails as a habit? Try not to do these things if you want to prevent potential dental emergencies. If you are our patient at Junction Family Dental and you experience a dental emergency, we are committed to seeing you the same day if possible. If a dental emergency happens and you are not yet our patient, we’ll do our best to see you as soon as possible within 24 hrs. Eliminating your pain and reducing your chances of infection is our priority. If we are closed and this is a medical emergency, please call 911. What happens if you find yourself with a dental emergency? Knocked out adult tooth: If the tooth is not broken, stick it back in until you can get to our dental clinic. Try placing the tooth back without touching the root. If it is a broken tooth, hold it in between your gums and cheek or place it in a glass of cold milk until you can be seen by your dentist. Keeping the tooth moist at all times is important. Swollen face: Apply ice to the swollen area and check to see if the source of swelling and pain is from a tooth. If it is, you can call our office to make an appointment. Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently use floss to remove any food caught between the teeth. Do not use aspirin on aching teeth or gums. An abscess in the mouth or gums: Do not pop an abscess, although it may be painful. It can indicate a disease or infection. Until you can see your dentist, use a topical analgesic on the abscess. Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth: Rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area immediately. Apply a cold compress to keep the swelling down. Call the office before it gets worse and becomes more painful. When a dental emergency happens, it’s wise to immediately make an appointment to your dentist or emergency room.
