A Typical Day on a Barge Holiday in France

Art and Culture,Travel & Tourism
Are you finally planning that much-wanted barge holiday? France is one of the most popular destinations (although they also run in the UK and other great European locations), and now the world is opening up again, it’s the ideal time to get those travel plans finalised!

While many guests are returning travellers (because, be warned, once you’ve tried a barge holiday, France will tempt you back time and time again), for first-timers it can be a little daunting if you have no idea of what to expect. Of course every itinerary is different, but we’ve put together what a ‘typical’ day might look like on a barge holiday. France’s gorgeous waterways make the perfect vantage from which to explore the food, wine, culture, art and history.

A Peaceful Sleep

Some people report the most peaceful sleep of their lives on board the barge and it’s not hard to imagine why. (Barges will not cruise at night and remain moored.) The cabins and staterooms are designed for the total comfort of guests, with private bathrooms, air-conditioning and heating and luxurious beds conducive to a tranquil sleep. You can wake up early or sleep in, it’s totally up to you, but enjoying a leisurely tea or coffee up on deck as the world awakes is a true joy.

A Tasty Breakfast

The attentive crew members are on hand to ensure you’ve got everything you need during breakfast, which, like all the meals, is prepared by the on board chef. It will comprise a delicious spread of local pastries, fresh fruit and juice, cheese, cold cuts and hot options served up on deck. If you’re an early riser you might even accompany the chef into the local village to pick up just-baked pastries.

Choice of Activities

The pace is slow and life is leisurely, so don’t expect to head off and cruise at top speed. You’ll generally cruise for about three or four hours in the morning or afternoon, depending on the itinerary. While you’re moored you’ll be able to enjoy the daily excursions that are offered, which could include anything from a visit to markets, a chateaux or two, a tasting at a vineyard, or a walking tour around a charming little town or village. Once the vessel sets off again, you can choose to cycle or walk along the towpaths that run alongside the waterways. Of course if you just want to relax, you’ll be able to read, chat, sunbathe or just watch the scenery slip by and wait for sundowners up on the deck as evening draws in.

The Evening Meal

Indulging in wonderful food and wine is a highlight of every barge holiday. France is famous for its cuisine and you’ll be treated to a genuine fine dining gastronomic experience. The award-winning chefs serve up classic French and international cuisine, designing their menus to reflect the culture of the region through which you travel and talking you through the dishes. Evening meals are always accompanied by the fantastic local wines and every night is an event of good food, great tastes and excellent company.

For anyone who’s looking for a different kind of holiday that allows for a slower, more relaxed way to get to know the off-the-beaten-track parts of the French countryside, there’s nothing more appealing than a barge holiday. France awaits!
