As an employer, or a person in control of the premises, you are responsible for health and safety and need to take the right precautions. This applies for all areas of health and safety and applies even more, in detail, when it comes to legionella and how you go about the management of legionella as a disease and the efforts you make and take in making sure it isn’t rife in your property / premises. Building and healthcare facility managers both have a need now more than ever to be doing what ever is needed and necessary to help ensure and prevent the growth and spread of the disease as it is and how it works. Legionella Risk Assessments are a key aspect of being able to manage as well as identify the presence and danger of legionella from within any premises. As a process and service, a legionella risk assessment is an important management process that will help to protect you, your employees and your organisation from harm. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems is vital as a means of being able to make sure its harmful presence is stunted. Any infection caused by Legionella bacteria is known as a 'legionellosis'. Many health and safety experts have focused on the carrying out of a Legionnaires assessment as an essential first step in the risk management aspect of being able to keep on top of the disease before it gets too late. A risk assessment will drill out as well as point out the very worst risk factors so a building manager or owner can then work to get rid of such risks from those who would potentially come into contact with the harmless disease. The assessments tend to be very bullet pointed as well as thorough pointing out the quickest and easiest ways to get this overseen and dealt with. Water systems in offices, factories and other premises are some of the main culprits to this risk factor and in detail, these are the places you are most likely to see a legionella management expert working. All premises where water is stored or distributed are at risk of exposure to Legionella, so employers or those in charge of premises such as landlords are required to carry out a risk assessment and put adequate controls in place.
