What to Expect on a Canal Holiday: France’s Canal du Midi

Art and Culture,Food & Beverages,Travel & Tourism
For those who are planning a canal holiday, France is a popular destination. It offers some of the best waterways in Europe, with the banks steeped in history, gastronomical delights and beautiful landscapes. But if you’re new to travelling like this, we're here to give you some insight into what to expect.

To show you all the best of what’s on offer with a canal holiday, France’s du Midi is taking centre stage - and you won’t be disappointed!

Introduction

The Canal du Midi has something for everyone, from foodies to history buffs, its 330-year-old route winds through ancient villages and beautiful vineyards. Top that off with the balmy Mediterranean weather and you’ve got a recipe for ultimate relaxation.

As you travel along the water, you’ll discover the region’s fascinating history as the architecture reflects the blend of the classical antique and traditional influences. Must-see sights on this route include the historic fortified city of Carcassonne and the underground Roman market in Narbonne.

Vessels

When planning your canal holiday, France’s waterways have several vessel options depending on personal preference. For the classic but more intimate experience, try a first class hotel barge which usually carries 8 people at capacity. If you’re looking for something unique, this route also hosts double-decker cruise boats, which provide larger cabins. Finally, for larger groups, you can try one of the traditional barges. Once used for carrying goods through the region, these now offer cruises for up to 10 people.

Things to Do

One of the best parts about a canal holiday is that it's slow, which means you can hop on and off as you please. The long flat towpaths are the perfect terrain for casual bike rides or steady strolls, so you can easily keep active on your break.

You’ll also be travelling through beautiful ancient towns and villages so the opportunities to hop off and explore some of the region’s history are plenty. Or if you simply want to sit back and relax on deck, the scenery is a perfect accompaniment.

Wining and Dining

Of course, the food is one of the best things on a canal holiday. France is known for its wines and cheeses, and there are no exceptions when it comes to river cruises. Travelling this region, you’ll be treated to outstanding meals offering Provençale and Mediterranean flavours. But let’s not forget the wine! The Languedoc region is the largest wine-producing area in the world and each meal will be perfectly paired with a delicious glass of vino.

It is clear that what you can expect on a waterway holiday in France is relaxation, history, and great food. With all of those boxes ticked, what more can you ask for?
