How to Teach Yourself Beekeeping

Environment,Hobbies,Food & Beverages
Are you interested in learning how to keep bees? You have come to the right place. Today, we explain beekeeping basics for beginners that can help you start and excel in this practice. Whether you want to keep bees as a hobby or start a business selling honey and other bee products, knowing how to keep these insects is crucial for achieving your goal.

Keeping bees is a relaxing and rewarding activity. It is becoming popular among garden owners. The delicious honey from these insects is enough motivation to keep them. However, they also offer other benefits that may make them a worthwhile investment.

Thankfully, learning the art of keeping bees is pretty simple. You only need to have the right conditions for this adventure to succeed. Learn here how to teach yourself beekeeping.

Where to Start

The first and the most crucial step when starting this adventure is to learn about all bees. There are different species of bees. Therefore, choosing the right one can be a bit challenging. Fortunately, various books on beekeeping will teach you about these insects to help you start your hives. Make sure you read as much as you can and understand the information. It will be easy to care for your bees once they arrive with this knowledge.

It’s also essential to learn how these insects make honey. That means you understand what bees are and how their hives work. Bees naturally make a nest, then fly to nearby flowers to extract nectar. Once they have it, they bring the nectar to their hives, where it starts becoming honey.

Again, you will need enough space for this activity. You don’t need too much but ensure you provide plenty of space for the bees to forage. It is usually advisable to take a beekeeping course to learn the ins and outs of this project. Apart from being helpful, the learning curve connects you to other bee lovers who will share some ideas.

Steps to Follow When Keeping Bees

Decide Where to Keep Them

Of course, you can’t keep bees inside your house. So, you have to find a great outdoor place. It could be on your roof, garden or unused farmland. Some people also keep their bees at a nearby apiary. Check out your local beekeeping association for more information about these apiaries.

Buy Your Beekeeping Equipment

Now that you’ve figured out where to keep bees, you need to get the right equipment for the job. Here are some of the things you’ll need:

• A hive

• A smoker to calm bees

• A hive tool for bee inspections

• A nuc of bees (a honey bee colony)

• A feeder for giving your bees some extra nourishment

• Hive frames

• Safety protection (gloves, boots and a bee suit)

Remember, since you are just starting the project, you don’t need a lot of tools. Just focus on the basic ones, then you can add more as your adventure expands. Also, note that while you can buy these tools online, some items are better to buy in person. Since these tools can be costly, you need to calculate how much you want to spend and stick within your budget.

Calculate the Time You Have for Beekeeping

You need to allocate at least one and a half hours per week to care for a single hive. So, the more hives you have, the more time you’ll spend. Usually, beekeeping isn’t a full-time activity. Therefore, you need to work with your schedule to see how much time you have. Also, allocate time for watching the bees going and coming into the hive. This will help you learn about the hive.

Purchase Your Bees

Once again, you have to check with your local beekeeping association for the members that can supply you with bees for your first hive. When purchasing these insects, ensure they are gentle. Since bees have different temperaments, it’s best to keep docile bees first. Make sure that the breeder knows you are a beginner so that they can find a gentle colony for you.

Look after the Bees

Now that you have everything in check, the work begins. Don’t worry about these insects, as they can survive without your input. Inspect your hives thoroughly during spring. Make sure that you check whether the queen is hatching. Also, check whether you have enough honey stores. Then clean the hives and remove dead bees and cobwebs. Additionally, remember to replace broken frames.

Then, when your bees multiply, you will need to inspect the hive regularly to check whether there is enough space for laying eggs and storing honey. If there isn’t, they may swarm (the queen, seeing there is less space, decides to run and form another colony leaving the hive with worker bees. Although the remaining bees will still thrive, once they realize they don’t have a queen, they’ll feed one larva with Royal Jelly to create a new queen. In that case, you will lose your workforce, and the amount of honey will reduce.

Collect Honey from Your Bees

Bees often produce more honey than they need. For instance, honeybees can make between 10kg-30kg during the winter and only need 10kg for survival. But, a beekeeper ought to know the amount to take out and leave behind to keep the bees happy. You can replace the honey you took by feeding them a sugar solution during autumn.

Keep Yourself Safe

It’s not unusual for beekeepers to get stung by bees. However, with time, they become immune to the bites. But some people may suffer a severe reaction to these stings, especially if they carry an epinen. Please consider your neighbors if keeping your bees at home. Discuss your plans to keep bees. As they may object, it’s good to check with them before wasting your money.

If you want to go beyond being just a beginner at this or any other skill, and work toward developing a real mastery, then you are going to need a deeper and more powerful strategy. What you need is a way to hack your brain so you can develop a winning mindset.

A winning mindset is a state of mind that allows you to enter a flow state at will. You do this by programming your subconscious mind.

Believe it or not, most of what you do throughout an average day is NOT freely chosen by your normal waking consciousness even though it may seem that way. The truth is that most of what you do on a day-to-day basis is done on autopilot. An example of this would be when you’re driving your car and as you do so you get bored and begin daydreaming. Before you know it, you find yourself several miles further down the road with absolutely NO memory of having driven those last several miles.

So, who exactly was driving while your waking consciousness was in la-la land, and how exactly did you manage to avoid an accident? Your subconscious mind was in control. You already spent years programming your subconscious with how to deal with a broad range of possible driving scenarios and thus it had no trouble taking the wheel while your waking consciousness took a little break. In other words, you were able to take effective actions without having to THINK about them.

The same way you programmed your subconscious to drive, you can also program it to automatically take successful actions toward mastering any other skill you decide that you want to learn. CLICK HERE to learn a proven, step-by-step formula to help you attain mastery at any skill you choose and achieve everything in life.
