The precise characteristics of a transformer are determined by a number of different variables in the end. When defining transformers, however, the following ten considerations are required to be taken into account. Ratings of the voltage, the ratio, and the method of connection It should be no surprise that not all of the desired kVA ratings are offered in the standard configuration for each voltage rating and ratio. In general, smaller sizes are appropriate for lower voltages, whereas bigger sizes are appropriate for higher voltages. Voltage Taps Taps are used to change the ratio of high-voltage windings to low-voltage windings in a transformer. Changing the taps on a transformer manually when it is de-energized is often done so to correct discrepancies in the ratio of the transformer and the nominal voltage of the system. The tap that is chosen in the transformer should be determined by the highest voltage circumstances when there is no load. Power transformers usually have impedance values. Impedance values for power transformers are typical. As stated in IEEE C57.12.00-1987, these values are at the self-cooled transformer kVA ratings and are subject to a 7.5% tolerance. Temperature Ratings for Insulation Different insulation systems can be used to make transformers. Performance data about conductor loss and impedance should be based on a temperature of 40°C above the rated average temperature rise of the conductor as measured by resistance. Sound Levels Transformers can make a lot of noise inside commercial buildings, especially in places where quiet is needed, like conference rooms and some office areas. Effects of Transformer Failures Transformer failures are rare. But the results can be very bad when larger transformers break down in high-rise buildings or other buildings where it is hard to get out. The air in transformer vaults should go straight outside. Harmonic Content of Load The breakdown of some kinds of transformers has been linked to nonlinear loads in very recent times. These loads generate third and higher harmonics to pass through the windings of the transformer, leading to its collapse. Paralleling transformers The parameters %IR, %IX, and %IZ must be specified if a transformer has the capability of being paralleled with another transformer.
