Powderhound Paradise: Tignes' Toughest Ski Runs

Travel & Tourism

Few resorts compare to the variety and excellence that the Espace Killy region has to offer. Linked to the popular Val d’Isere, Tignes has quickly become one of the most loved ski resorts in France, thanks to its limitless run opportunities and attractive villages. While there is something for everyone at this renowned resort, it is a dream destination for powderhounds looking for a thrill. Here you’ll find plenty of chances to go off-piste and, thanks to the reliable snowfall on the Grand Motte glacier, you can hit the slopes all year round.

The place has come a long way from the early days of being a bland purpose-built resort, and today you’ll find accommodation ranging from luxury hotels to catered ski chalets. Tignes is made of four different villages, each with a unique vibe; so whether you’re a family who likes to stay active on holiday, or a group of friends looking to shred up the slopes, you’ll be able to find the right place for you.

Speaking of which, let’s jump straight into the top three advanced runs to try in this incredible resort.

1. Palafour

As every experienced skier or snowboarder will know, it’s always best to warm the legs up at the start of a season – and this is the perfect run for that. This long, wide blue piste has lots of fun jibbing areas, taking you from Aiguille Percee all the way back down to Le Lac.

2. Grande Motte to Val Claret

This is definitely a run for more experienced skiers and you’ll need a bit of confidence to tackle it. It begins at the top of the glacier, at 3456m, you’ll then head down Descent where you’ll come across some moguls. Next up, you’ll head into Double M and Cirse, which are both red runs, and end up in Val Claret, at 2100m. If you’re feeling confident, try and see how quickly you can make the descent! Stop for lunch at one of the great restaurants in the centre or, if you’re staying in one of the catered ski chalets, Tignes’ finest hosts will have a delicious spread waiting for you at home.

3. La Sache

Warning: this is not for the faint-hearted. La Sache is probably one of the most advanced runs in the region. It’s long and physically challenging, so only take it on if you’re a true pro when it comes to shredding the slopes. This is one of the longest black runs in Europe, so you’ll need quite a bit of endurance to tackle it. You’ll have to be prepared for some serious leg burn, however L’Armailly awaits at the foot of the lifts in Les Brevieres and it has a great terraced bar and restaurant to rest your tired muscles.

The Espace Killy region boasts some of the best skiing in Europe, making it the perfect destination for avid powderhounds. In addition, the resort facilities are unbeatable, with a great selection of restaurants and catered ski chalets. Tignes should be at the very top of your list when planning your next ski holiday!
