It never ceases to amaze me how some consumers will believe just about anything that they read in print. The case in point here is the large number of companies that advertise that they can fix bad credit. They offer a guarantee and state that their years of experience gives them some kind of elevated status with the credit bureaus that allows them to make such a guarantee because they have proof that it works. You need to be aware that they have no such proof that they have the ability to do anything to fix bad credit which you do not also have at your fingertips and can do for free. But that desperation to fix bad credit is not really desperation but in reality is simply a lack of knowledge on how you can do this yourself, for free, instead of paying fees of $100 to $3000 for something. First, you need to look at the reasons WHY you have bad credit. Typically this has been a result of being consistently late on loan payments and credit card payments. More often than not, these late payments were not as a result of just being too lazy to make the payments, but as a result of something happening which you did not anticipate, such as a job layoff, major medical bills, a messy divorce or something along those lines. Very few people miss payments consistently just for the fun of it, because there is absolutely no fun associated with having bad credit. Next, you need to understand some terms. Your credit score is what determines what type of credit you have and what kind of risk you would be to a potential lender. And your credit score is determined for the most part by your credit history, which is a historical statement of how you have made payments in the past, did your payment arrive on time, how close are you to your credit limit, and things along those lines. So since your credit score determines if your credit is classified as good, average, or bad, and your credit score is determined by your credit history, where the word HISTORY is something that has already happened over a period of time, do you see why credit repair companies can do nothing? If they are claiming they can change history or pretend that historical facts (i.e., being late on payments) did not happen, can you now see how such claims are ludicrous? What you need to do, and you can do this yourself without paying a company a cent, is to start changing that historical trend for your credit so that your credit score will be calculated higher. This takes time since a historical trend does not get created overnight, or even in a couple of days, weeks, or even months. But the thing that is guaranteed is that if you take your credit seriously enough to where you really want to have a GOOD credit score, then you will take your financial obligations seriously enough to make each and every payment on time and to also understand what other factors go into creating and maintaining a good credit score. The absolute best way to do this is to start paying your credit cards and loan payments on time, each and every month. Pay at least the minimum amount and more if you can. Don't wait until the last minute, because if your payment is due on the tenth of the month, just having your payment to the company by the tenth does not mean it is on time, because it can take a day or two for them to process your payment and post it to your account. Keep your outstanding balance on your credit cards to no more than 25% or so of your credit limit. This shows responsible use of credit and still gives you a margin for emergencies or necessities. And the best thing you can do to fix bad credit is to get copies of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus and make sure everything reported there is accurate.
