Romantic gifts and their whole meaning has changed over the past few decades. With the overwhelming increase in the variety of different gifts available, and the ease with which they can be purchased from a variety of worldwide sources via the internet, it can now be somewhat difficult for a man to choose the right gift. Society itself influences what kind of romantic gift has become acceptable for a woman. Thirty years ago a woman would have been pleased with receiving an embroidered handkerchief or some fragrance and would perceive this as being a romantic gesture. The power of marketing in recent years, however, has perhaps changed a woman’s perception of what is now acceptable as a romantic gift. The pressure is increasingly on a man now to meet a woman’s expectations. Some of the following are considered in modern society as acceptable romantic gifts. Flowers Always a winner, but the right type and, in some cases colour, are fundamental in getting it right. Roses are considered to be the most romantic and a dozen of the darkest red with a romantic message attached will be considered by the majority of women to be almost perfect. Romantic Jewellery The range and price of jewellery has increased markedly due to the progress made by some of the big retailers. Gold is considered to be the majority of women to be the romantic metal of choice but some beautiful pieces made from the finest silver would still suffice. If you really want to impress, go for platinum, but find out first if she values this more expensive metal. If you want to guarantee getting it right, buy diamonds, but don’t even think about buying anything other than the real thing – it just doesn’t cut the mustard. If you feel that giving an item such as a pendant, ring or necklace is too ‘committed’ at this stage in your relationship, a functional item of jewellery such as a watch is perfectly acceptable romantic gift. Fragrance This one can be a complete winner or a complete loser. Going into a department store and trying to find the right one by sniffing several different perfumes is not going to get you anywhere. You will simply go for the one the salesperson has been skilful enough to make you buy. Do some research; ask your partners friends and relatives what your partner likes best. If the situation warrants it; check what type she is already using and make a note of it for later use. Some of the ‘higher end’ perfumes like Channel No. 5 are absolute classics and is considered by a particular female type as having special significance. Overall, it is best that you do some research before just launching out and buying the first thing that comes to mind just to get you off the hook. As the range of items available is so vast, find out what your partner considers to be the perfect romantic gift but do this well in advance!
