Although there are plenty of advanced techniques you may use to optimize your websites for the search engines, just a few small tweaks can make a huge difference in your search engine rankings. You don't need to be an expert on search engine marketing to use these techniques either. If you know basic HTML, then you can implement these techniques. Here are five things you may do to optimize your website. Remember that you are optimizing individual pages to rank well. Apply these techniques to each of your pages. 1. Create a keyword rich title. The title is what you see in the top bar (title bar) of the browser. It is also the title that the search engines index to tell searchers what your page is about. Although this doesn't count a lot in your search strategy, it was recently reported that the search engines do consider this important. Write a keyword title that correctly describes what your page is about. (You will find the title tags between the head tags in the top of the HTML for the page.) 2. Add a keyword rich description and meta tags. These two elements are important in getting your page correctly indexed in the search engines. They also help tell searchers what your page is about. Although they don't count in terms of rankings, you still want to add these elements to your page because your searchers will see the description. The description and the metatags are also located between the head tags in the top of the HTML document. 3. Include your keywords in the file name. The file name is the actual name of your page. This can tell your searcher more about what your page is about. It is what you actually name your page. For example: file-name.html, file-name.php... Some search engine marketers will tell you to make sure you use a keyword rich domain, but it's been my experience that this really isn't that important. A keyword rich file name will do about the same thing. 4. Write keyword rich content. Before you write the content for your page, you want to do keyword research to find out what searchers are looking for. Then, when you're writing your content, you want to include these keywords. Use the keywords that are specifically related to your content. Write content around these keywords that will help your searchers. Give them a taste of how you may solve their problems. Don't sacrifice readibility for making your page optimized. Weave the keywords into the content. 5. Build backlinks. Backlinks are links pointing back to your website from other sites. This isn't just any sites though; these are sites that are related and complementary to the content of your website. The easiest and fastest way to build these links is write articles and submit them to high ranking article directories. Also submit your content to sites on your topic that accept your content. Look for sites with good page rank and high Alexa rankings. These sites will help you rank higher. Like these tips?
