Everyone has seen an ID card at least once, usually held with festival lanyard or in a card holder. Whether it is at the local library, at a fitness club, or even at their job, everyone who has ever used an ID card knows how important it is and that they must take good care of it. Such cards are extremely durable and are very difficult to damage, accidentally or intentionally, and the laminated ID cards have been known to last several years without showing any signs of wear and tear. The process of creating such cards however remains a mystery to most people, but there are dedicated companies that handle their creation, using professional equipment such as plastic ID card printers and ID card printing software. To have the required durability, an ID card needs to contain all the desired elements such as name, address and any other relevant information, as well as the required security features. All of these elements should be included in the card when it is created, although they can be added later. However, including them at creation makes them an integrated part of the card, and the template used to create one card can be used to create the others as well. After the cards are created, they need to be laminated. Laminated cards have a much higher durability, as the lamination protects them from liquids, dust and other particles. While liquids will not be able to penetrate the laminated surface, dirt will simply slide off the card or will be wiped very easy, and the card will be as good as new. This also makes the card extremely difficult to tear, almost impossible in fact, and a laminated card can last numerous years without receiving any damage. The life of the ID card is lengthened immensely by the lamination process, and although a bit more expensive, it reduces costs in the long run because the cards will not need replacing any time soon. This is especially important for ID cards used in high security institutions, as advanced security features included into the cards construction can raise the cost of the cards, and replacing them often is not a cheap process. Having the cards safe from damage is worth the extra investment. As mentioned above, special equipment is needed to create the cards, but all that equipment is useless without the proper software. The software for creating the cards can be extremely cheap or extremely expensive. Just like any other software, the price depends on the features being offered and on the company that created it. High quality software from a well known company will be extremely expensive, but it will also have options for every security feature you may want to implement in the cards, including magnetic strips and biometric data such as fingerprints. Cheaper software will not offer everything, and the cards created with the software may not look exactly in reality like they do on the screen. It is always better to invest in high quality software to make sure that the cards created are of high quality, because replacing hundreds of cards because of an error can be extremely costly. The ID card printing software is used to create a template of the card that needs to be produced, with empty spaces where the photo, name, address, and other details of the employee need to be added. Then each employee is created a card of his or her own, from that template. The process is relatively simple, although the extra security features may be a little more complicated. There are also companies that handle the card creation process, using their own plastic ID card printers and software. Choosing to have the cards created by such a company is certainly a solution, and it is a very viable one, especially if the number of cards created is low. Such companies also offer accessories such as festival wristbands and card holders for a low price, so even if creating the cards in house, such a company is still a good choice to purchase accessories from. Investing in high quality cards is certainly worth the financial effort, as the security offered by them is hard to attain using any other methods, so any company still pondering about whether to implement ID cards should simply do it and reap the benefits.
