Rabbi Bunim explained, “I am God, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians (Exodus 6:6).” “A burden,” he said, “is usually carried with ease after one has become accustomed to it. When God observed that the Children of Israel were growing accustomed to their tasks and labored at them without complaint, then He deemed it time for them to be liberated (Siach Sarfei Kodesh, Volume III, 130).” It is difficult for most of us to relate to our existence as exile; that we need to be freed. Rather than remonstrate with ourselves over this “lacking,” we can say to God, “Our very comfort in exile is the reason You must rush Redemption!” Amidah-Ingathering of Exile: Redeem those so accustomed to the burdens of exile that they are accustomed to it. Haggadah: “And God heard our voice,” as it is said, “The Lord heard their groaning; The Lord remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.” God “remembered” our groaning, but no longer heard it directly, as they stopped as they grew accustomed to their lives. It was then that God remembered His Covenant with the Patriarchs that their children would never be comfortable with limitations!
