The United States flag has a extended and honored history. Nearly every historian can reach an agreement that Francis Hopkinson, a New Jersey Congressman who signed the Declaration of Independence, initially conceived it. This was in reply to a measure conceded by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. It stated in part "resolved, that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." This continued as the law of the land in anticipation of January 13th, 1794, when the act was revised to allow an overall of fifteen stars and fifteen stripes, in acknowledgement of the accumulation of two added states. As additional states were embraced, it became apparent that a stripe could not be inserted for each one. Therefore, on April 4, 1818, a bill was signed by President Monroe, endlessly setting the amount of stripes at thirteen. Conversely, as additional states would be noted by the supplementing of an additional star in the upper left hand field. As soon as the Civil War broke out, there was specific deliberation as to whether the amount of stars should be lessened to mirror the states that were in progression. President Lincoln intensely resisted this, nevertheless, and the field of stars persisted and continued unaffected during the battle, the exception being to insert extra ones when Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia merged with the Union amid 1859 and 1865. On June 24, 1912, President Taft regulated the sizes of the United States flag and confirmed that each star must have a point facing directly up. The flag was transformed two times by President Eisenhower in the 1950s, from 48 stars to the existing 50. As Americans, recognizing our past is extremely significant.
