The Jew happens to be a distinct community in the world whose history dates back to the ancient times of the Jesus Christ. They are yet another community known for their religious and cultural steadfastness and orthodoxy. Though the reformist Jew sect is different from their orthodox counterparts, they still abide by certain common rules of their sect. The Jew people have a culture and religious belief that is very interesting and worldwide many people are curious to know about their life style and the culture they practice. We will discuss about certain Jewish customs and rituals that are integral to their life. Jewish wedding has two distinct stages; one being ‘kiddushin’ and the other being ‘nissuin’. The first stage is more like a betrothal ceremony where the woman is prohibited from getting engaged to other men socially and in the next stage allows the couple to be with one another which means that they get the formal acknowledgement of husband and wife in the society. Before the marriage ceremony starts, ‘ketubah’ which is quite like the legal marriage agreement, is signed by two witnesses. Now a day’s ‘kiddushin’ is performed when the groom gives his bride the wedding ring or other valuable gifts and take oath of staying together as husband and wife. The ‘nissuin’ ceremony is accomplished by the ‘chuppah’ ceremony which is like a wedding canopy. The couple stands beneath the ‘chuppah’ and take vow of creating their own roof and staying together as long as they live. The wedding is next followed by celebration, food and wine. In Jewish tradition and culture the term ‘bat’ means daughter. As tradition goes when the bat reaches the age of 12 then a religious ceremony is performed for her that gives her the right of taking her own decisions and recognizes her as a grown up adult. In the orthodox Jew tradition the women are prohibited from participating in any religious ceremonies or their power of doing so is quite limited. During this ceremony which is known as ‘Bat Mitzvah’ the girl is given the right to read the ‘Torah’ (religious book of the Jew) in certain parts. Bat Mitzvah Talit which is made of silk or pure wool is given to the lady as her Bat Mitzvah gift. It has a religious significance as it is worn over their garments before they go for prayers. Shofar which is a Ram’s horn is blown during the synagogue services in the Jewish ceremonies. The use of it is incorporated in every Jewish religious occasion.
