A lot of people may not know it but the constitutional rights of the Syrian people have been suspended since 1963. The nation's government is exercising its ruling powers under a long declared State of Emergency. Although the country's constitution, which has been instituted in 1973, is being implemented, it cannot be denied that the governing body continues to function without adherence to the republic framework of which the nation has been integrated with during its independence in April 17, 1946. Although it is difficult to believe that the ruling regime is utilizing a Syrian political system that contains democratic views, Syria is in fact propagated with a structure that is fortified by three major institutions. The executive, judicial and legislative branches of the government are the pillars from which the nation attains its stability. The executive sector of the Syrian political system introduces the president, the prime minister, a couple of vice presidents and the cabinet as the prime holders of authority in power. A unicameral body governs the legislative wing. The judiciary is being controlled by the Supreme Judicial Council, the Supreme Constitutional Court, the Cassation Court, the Court of Appeals, the Court of Economic Security, the Supreme State Security Court, the Personal Status and the lower level courts. There are a number of political parties that encompass Syria's fourteen districts. Among these are the National Progressive Front and the Arab Socialist Renaissance Parties which are the government’s prime factions. Included on the list are the Socialist Unionist Democratic Party, the Syrian Arab Socialist Union, the Syrian Communist Party, the Syrian Docial Nationalist Party and the Unionist Socialist Party. Although the government has decreed the opposition to introduce their own representation groups, the response is somewhat subdued. CIA analysts are quick to point out that while the Syrian nation has reinforced itself with a constitutional framework, its political structure is controlled by an authoritarian body. Elections continue to exist. Political figures are voted into key positions. However, amendments are made to ensure that the same government system will dominate. Such scenarios have been very evident since 1970 up to the present day wherein only a couple of presidents have dominated Syrian politics. The father-and-son tandem of Hafiz and Bashar Al-assad has been a fixture in the Syrian nation’s political system. This situation has been made possible by the intervention of the military group of the country. The influence of the security forces discourages any opposition to the Assad regime. Any flame of protests is abruptly dosed off by brutal or forceful means. Loyalty to the reigning figure is the only tolerable thing. The propagation of violence has flourished when the regime has questionably catapulted individuals from the Alawi group to key posts in the government. The approach has been compared to what Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did with the members of his Ba'ath Party. Although the Assad regime has been pursuing reforms, its suppression to protests through violent means has caught the eye of the Arab League which prompted the group to implement punitive actions through the United Nations Security Council's initiative. As of late, Syria has been suspended from the League based upon the way it has been handing its inner turmoil.
