Decor accessories like window curtains and rods are an essential part of home decor. There are many kinds of curtain rods and window coverings you can choose from to dress up your windows and add style and function. Curtain Rods Tension rods are usually used inside a window frame where the ends of the rod are tightened against the supporting walls to create tension. They are considerably lighter than other curtain rods and so the fabric you choose for your window coverings needs to be light enough to keep the rod upright. Tension rods can be used in place of almost any other curtain rod and when used in combination with valances or swags at the top, they can make for decorative café curtains. Tension rods are very common for kitchen windows where they are placed in the middle of the window. Tiers are then used to cover the bottom half of the window. Roman shades or roller blinds can be used when the entire window needs to be covered. Magnetic rods are decorative curtain rods that are very similar to tension rods. The only difference being that magnetic rods are held together using a magnet which is why they require a metallic window frame in order to work. Sash rods are another style of curtain rods which are thinner than other styles and decorative. These rods are placed slightly above the window with the curtain hanging slightly below the base of the window. Window Coverings Sheer or lace curtains are decorative window coverings that let in more light and also allow people to enjoy the view outdoors. They are more likely to let in drafts and keep the room well ventilated. Sheers are usually used as layered window treatments with thick drapes. Drapes are thick window treatments that help determine the amount of light that can enter a room. They also help with insulation and offer privacy. Blinds are another type of window covering that consists of long flat slats made from plastic, wood or metal. These slats are suspended using a thick string which is threaded through them with a mechanism at the top for opening and closing. Venetian blinds offer a neat, formal look for the home office. Mix and match these window treatments to create contrasts that will breathe life into your home.
