Growing your very own shrooms can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience, especially if it’s the Coriolus Versicolor mushroom which, can provide a range of benefits to one’s health. The essences extracted from the mushroom—including Polysaccharide K (PSK), Polysaccharide-peptide (PSP)—can help boost the immune system and promote overall good health. Research suggests that the best time to start growing Coriolus Versicolor mushrooms is in the early spring. Start your cultivation project off by buying some turkey tail plugs from a fungi or mushroom distributor. Next, prepare a sturdy log on which to cultivate and grow your turkey tail mushrooms. You can choose from beech, oak, maple, birch, willow, aspen, and poplar or alder logs. It’s important to make sure that the hardwood log is fresh and healthy; it should also be clean, i.e., any wayward branches must be sawed off. The ideal log will be around 40 inches long and 6 to 12 inches in diameter. Using a 5/16 drill bit, fashion holes that are approximately 1-inch deep into the hardwood log. You can make sure the drill bit is clean by rubbing it with alcohol prior to usage. It’s also important to remember to drill the log in staggered rows (about three inches apart) and to space the holes six inches apart from each other. Tap the turkey tail plugs into the drilled holes using a mallet. Seal the drilled holes or any cracks or scars on the bark of the hardwood log with wax (or melted cheese wax) to help rid it of insects and help keep moisture in. Place the log in a shaded but warm area. The ideal temperature for Coriolus Versicolor mushroom growth is 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s important not to let your Coriolus Versicolor mushroom dry out; the log should be moist at all times for the turkey tail to grow effectively. Watering the hardwood log once a week should do the trick. If you prefer a hassle-free approach, just turn on your sprinkler for a couple of hours weekly to soak the log. If you follow all the above steps in cultivating the Coriolus Versicolor mushroom, you should be ready to harvest your mushrooms by the time summer rolls in. You may draw out the mushroom’s nutritional content through hot water. Include the decoction in your daily diet for better immune support.
