Circuit training is the principle of performing a sequence of exercises with limited or no rest between. It gets your heart rate up, providing cardiovascular benefit, while giving you weight-bearing exercise to provide muscular development and definition. Circuit training can be done using resistance machines or with free weights. You can choose to rest for a short period (perhaps 20 or 30 seconds), not at all, or to jog in place or do stair-stepping for a minute between exercises.Circuit training is effective for fat loss because you’ll get your heart rate up and keep it there, as with cardio, while getting the muscle building and metabolism boosting effects of weight training.

The choice of whether to use heavy weight and low repetitions or lighter weight with more repetitions depends to some extent on your specific goals. Briefly, heavy weight with low repetitions is most effective for building strength, while lighter weights with moderate repetitions is most effective in increasing muscle size. If your gym doesn’t have a dedicated circuit, you may find it tricky to complete your circuit without finding someone using the equipment you are heading to next. To reduce this effect, plan to go at off-peak hours so there won’t be as much competition. If your circuit depends on free weights as opposed to machines, you probably won’t encounter as much difficulty.

You can also build some flexibility into your circuit, so if the equipment you need isn’t available, you can do something else, another exercise or some cardio. The key to the circuit is in keeping moving so you need to be able to do that.
