If you are serious about losing weight, you’ll need to incorporate both diet and exercise into your weight loss plan. Incorporate more activity into your whole day. Studies have those who sit all day, then exercise for 30 minutes, have about the same risk of heart disease as those who don’t exercise at all. You don’t necessarily have to count calories, as long as you are aware of roughly how many you are eating. Cut down your portions and eat nutrient dense foods like high-quality low-fat protein, complex carbohydrates like vegetables, and healthy fats like olive oil. If you find you’re not losing weight, cut back further – but not too far; consuming too few calories (typically, less than 1200) will cause your metabolism to slow, effectively stalling your weight loss.

Avoid refined sugar and flour and artificial sweeteners. Choose real butter instead of margarine; it’s easier for your body to digest and process. Many people do best when they eat six small meals, because they don’t feel as hungry. This also keeps your blood sugar levels steady. Eat within an hour after your workout to replenish your energy stores and to take advantage of an increased metabolism.

Don’t think of diet and exercise as something you do just until you reach your goal. It’s a lifestyle change that you make as a commitment to being healthier for the rest of your life.
