What's In Cockroach Bait and How It Works Well With Cockroach

Home Improvement,Health,Family & Parenting
Homeowners attempting to control cockroaches themselves will find insecticidal baits and boric acid effective and relatively easy to use.Today's technology has so advanced that you can find roach-bait formulations designed specifically for certain types of roaches.

Cockroach baits contain a slow-acting insecticide incorporated into a food attractant. Roaches locate and feed on the bait, typically contained in small, plastic bait trays, and crawl away to die. Bait carried back to the nesting area also kills other roaches after being expelled in the sputum and feces. Roach baits are by far the most effective treatment products for prevention and extermination of roach infestations.

Cockroach baits are insecticides. They include stomach poisons mostly made with roach food, where the food only functions as an appetizing attractant for the roaches. The active ingredient – the actual poison – is but a small percentage of the product, yet enough to kill the roaches.

In contrast to liquid sprays or aerosols, cockroach baits require no mixing and it is not necessary to empty kitchen cabinets or cover food preparation surfaces prior to treatment. People and pets are not exposed to the toxicant since the insecticide is enclosed within a plastic, child-resistant container. Another advantage of cockroach baits is that they have essentially no volatility or odor.

The effects of the poisons differ from one toxin to another. Fipronil, for instance, affects the nervous system of the roaches whereas hydramethylnon, another type active ingredient, works on their metabolic system. Both are extremely effective stomach poisons and considered by experts to be "the best roach baits".

So, do roach-baits work? Most certainly, without a doubt! You can also kill a roach through its skin.

Like other insects, roaches breathe through tiny openings in their skin called spiracles. Their skin is also made up of plate-like segments that are connected by a sensitive soft fatty tissue, which enables the movement of the many body segments.

Some roach control products, like Boric Acid, attack the sensitive tissues by removing the moisture and consequently drying up and killing the roach.

The key to successful cockroach control with baits is proper placement. Bait trays should be placed in all areas where cockroaches are seen, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Prime locations include under sinks and toilets, beneath refrigerators, dishwashers and stoves, next to trash containers and inside cabinets and storage areas.

Placement of baits in the middle of exposed surfaces, i.e., away from edges or corners, will be far less effective. In most cases, a minimum of 12 bait stations should be used at one time, placing 10 baits in the kitchen and two in the bathroom. If cockroaches are seen in other areas such as bedrooms or utility rooms, use 2-4 additional baits. Do not spray around bait stations with other insecticides or cleaning agents as this could deter roaches from feeding on the bait.
