Prior to Digging, Think of These Tips

Automotive,Construction
Heavy equipment is an essential part of any construction job, whether the project is large or small. Digger derrick trucks can make quick work of any job involving digging, earth moving or drilling holes; however, it is important to correctly assess the job so that the right type of digger and the proper attachments can be chosen to get the job done safely and easily. Because of the many options that are available with this equipment, before starting any type of job, several things should be considered to be sure the proper machine is selected for the task at hand. Here are a few of the items to take into account.

  • Specifications - Finding the right equipment for the job is key to getting the work done quickly and getting it done safely as well, eliminating any risk to either the operator or the truck. Each unit is designed to work under certain conditions such as the soil composition, terrain, weather and more. Ignoring these conditions and using equipment beyond what is considered as safe limits invites strain on the machine, broken or bent parts, the potential for bodily injury or even death, and many other expensive and avoidable situations. Digger trucks come in various sizes with various capabilities depending upon its weight, motor and hydraulics. Staying within the recommended guidelines guarantees the best job will be done.

  • Availability - Since most companies only own the machines needed the most, it is often necessary to rent certain trucks. After assessing a job and determining what type of equipment is needed, renting the proper vehicle is often the best option and much less expensive than working with unsuitable trucks. It is usually possible to find the exact vehicle needed to get the work done efficiently while eliminating a monthly loan or lease payment. It is just important to carefully inspect any vehicle to buy or rent irregardless of what any paperwork might say about its condition prior to using any unfamiliar equipment. Report any damage that is noted or any safety issues before operating the unit and either have the damaged part replaced if that is the safest thing to do or report any defects to avoid any charges at a later date.

  • Operation - Take into consideration the fact that digger derricks are like multiple units in one machine, so specialized training may be required prior to using the truck. Although many workers may be able to operate the auger, there are many other jobs that can be done by these trucks with the use of different attachments. It should never be assumed that an operator who can run an auger has the skill to operate a trencher or a stump grinder if they have never actually used one before. When using attachments, or renting unfamiliar equipment, be sure to retain a skilled operator who is familiar with both the machine and the attachments that will be used.

There are many other things to consider for proper operation of a digger derrick in order to get optimal results; however, with these tips as well as some common sense and prior research of work needs, finding an acceptable unit and any required attachments should be fairly easy. Getting work done efficiently, avoiding problems and being safe just depends on using the right digger for the job. So before starting that digging job, remember these tips!
