When it comes to legal DNA testing, this simply means DNA test results that are admissible in a court of law. DNA testing is done for many different reasons. It can be done to establish paternity for the purpose of a father gaining access to his child, a mother getting child support, or even a child being included in an inheritance. DNA testing is also used in immigration situations to confirm the relationships between family members. DNA testing itself is easy and straightforward. In fact, it's so easy that you can do it at home. Yes, you can simply order a kit, take a sample, and send it in for analysis. All you do to get a sample is take a swab of the inside of your cheek, something called a buccal sample. However, no judge will accept the results of this test in a court of law. Why not? How does the judge or anyone else know for sure that the sample came from you? How do they know that they sample didn't become damaged or contaminated at some point during the process? The answer is that they don't know. This is where legal DNA testing comes into the picture. With legal testing there is a guarantee that the sample came from you because a qualified third-party collects the sample. This is generally a medical doctor, who collects the sample, puts it in the appropriate container, fills out the forms, and signs the backs of two photographs of you stating that he or she took the sample from the person in the photo. Also, with legal testing the sample is guaranteed not to be damaged and not to be contaminated. This is because the sample follows a chain of custody, with each person signing a form when they receive and when they hand off the sample. Finally, to ensure that a DNA test meets legal requirements, the sample must be analyzed by an accredited lab, a lab that is guaranteed to follow certain guidelines when it comes to the handling and analysis of the sample. When these procedures are in place, a judge will accept the results of a DNA test in court and this is the only way this will happen in legal matters. If you want your DNA tested out of mere curiosity, then the at-home test will suffice, but if you are dealing with a legal matter, then you will need to go the legal route. When getting legal DNA testing done, it will cost you more than the at-home alternative. Unfortunately, this is not an option. If it is a paternity lawsuit, then there might be a way to have a test done for free, but you will have to check at the state level to see if such help exists. Whether it has to do with your child, an inheritance, or the immigration of your family, going the legal route when getting DNA testing done is worth the extra time, effort, and money it will cost.
